A half-dozen New York-breds were among the 196 individual horses pre-entered for the Nov. 5-6 Breeders’ Cup World Championships at Del Mar, including five for the opening Future Stars Friday program.
Three of the New York-breds were pre-entered for the two-day program’s opening race, the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint. Waterville Lake Stable’s homebred Derrynane and Michael Dubb’s and Michael Caruso’s Run Curtis Run were selected into the body of the 5-furlong Juvenile Turf Sprint field with Chester and Mary Broman’s homebred Makin My Move listed third on the also-eligible list.
Run Curtis Run, winner of the Rick Violette Stakes on the dirt at Saratoga Race Course in his second start, exits a second in the Grade 3 Futurity going 6 furlongs on the turf last time out at Belmont Park. Bred by Larry Goichman, the son of Summer Front is trained by Mike Maker. He was foaled at Edition Farm in Hyde Park.

Derrynane, a 2-year-old daughter of Quality Road who was foaled at Berkshire Stud in Pine Plains, won her debut going 5 1/2 furlongs on the grass at Saratoga before a fifth there on yielding ground in the Bolton Landing Stakes. She rebounded with a victory in the Sept. 19 Woodbine Cares Stakes in her most recent start for trainer Christophe Clement.
Makin My Move could move up a spot on the AE list with the Clement-trained Slipstream having first preference in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf. The 2-year-old daughter of Carpe Diem ran off to a 12 1/2-length victory in an Aug. 20 maiden special weight going 6 furlongs on the dirt at Saratoga before finishing a close fourth in the Grade 3 Matron Stakes Oct. 9 at Belmont. Makin My Move is trained by John Kimmel, who sent out the Bromans’ Bar of Gold to a 66-1 upset in the 2017 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at Del Mar. Makin My Move was foaled at Chestertown Farm in Chestertown.
The Bromans are also represented by their homebred Coinage, winner of the Grade 3 With Anticipation at Saratoga and the first foal out of Bar of Gold, in the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf. Co-owned by D. J. Stable and trained by Hall of Famer Mark Casse, the son of Tapit finished third last time in the Nownownow Stakes at Monmouth Park. He was foaled at Chestertown Farm in Chestertown.
Nownownow winner Dakota Gold, a son of Freud bred by Sequel Thoroughbreds and Ron Bowden, puts his 2-for-2 mark on the line in the 1-mile Juvenile Turf. He won an off-the-turf open maiden Sept. 2 at Saratoga before coming back in 24 days to win his turf debut at Monmouth for trainer Danny Gargan and owners Reeves Thoroughbred Racing.He was foaled at The New Hill Farm in Hoosick Falls.

Three-time New York-bred champion Somelikeithotbrown was pre-entered for his return to North America’s biggest day in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Mile. The 5-year-old son of Big Brown, foaled at Sequel Stallions New York in Hudson and third in the Juvenile Turf in 2018 at Churchill Downs, ranks third on the AE list for the Mile after 2020 Mile winner Order of Australia was retired and could need more defections to make the field. Bred by Hot Pink Stables and Sand Dollar Stables, owned by Skychai Racing and Sand Dollar and trained by Mike Maker, Somelikeithotbrown finished third last time out in the Grade 1 Keeneland Turf Mile.
The half-dozen New York-bred pre-entered runners look to join the previous three Breeders’ Cup winners from the Empire State. London Bridge became the first when he took the Breeders’ Cup Marathon in 2013. Dayatthespa followed that win a year later in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf on the way to winning the Eclipse Award for champion turf female. Bar of Gold added her name to the list in 2017.
Pre-entries for the 14 Breeders’ Cup races were due Monday. Final entries for the 38th edition of the Breeders’ Cup are due Nov. 1 with post positions drawn that day. The Future Stars Friday features five races, starting with the Grade 2 Juvenile Turf Sprint at 5:50 p.m. ET through the Grade 1 Juvenile Turf at 8:30 p.m. Championship Saturday features nine Breeders’ Cup events starting with the Grade 1 Filly and Mare Sprint at 3:05 p.m. ET running through the $6 million Grade 1 Classic at 8:40 p.m.
The Breeders’ Cup will be broadcast on the NBC Sports Network from 5-9 p.m. ET Friday, Nov. 5 and from 2:30 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6. The coverage shifts to NBC from 8-9 p.m., the window that includes the Classic.
