Although three of the five New York-breds catalogued to sell during the prestigious opening book of the marathon Keeneland September yearling sale were scratched, the trading on the first three days of the 13-session sale still produced a standout in the form of Hip 250, a colt by Giant’s Causeway who fetched $220,000 in Tuesday’s second session.
Bred by Pine Ridge Stables Ltd, Hip 250 is the first registered foal out of Choice Pearl a Kentucky-bred placed runner by Any Given Saturday. Pine Ridge purchased the mare for $165,000 at the 2013 Keenland November sale. Her extended family can boast such luminaries as Grade 1 winners Awesome Humor, Emcee (also a sire) and Constitution. The colt was purchased by Ben Glass, Agent from the Paramount Sales consignment.
In all, eight New York-bred are scheduled to come under the hammer in Keeneland’s second book. The schedule for the remaining sessions is as follows:
Dark Day on Thursday, Sept. 15. No sale will be held.
Friday-Saturday, Sept. 16-17. Book 2 sessions begin at 10 a.m.
Sunday-Sunday, Sept. 18-25. Book 3-6 sessions begin at 10 a.m.
