(Edited Press Release)

McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds, announced the relocation of Canada’s leading freshman sire of 2011 Mr. Sekiguchi, a 9-year-old son of Storm Cat, for the 2013 breeding season.

An $8-million purchase at the 2004 Keeneland September yearling sale, Mr. Sekiguchi is the sire of leading Canadian juvenile Rose and Shine, winner of Canada’s Princess Elizabeth Stakes, and Muskoka Stakes ($383,000).  Of Mr. Mr. Sekiguchi’s record at stud, Joe McMahon said, “In 2011 Mr. Sekiguchi ranked above Hard Spun, Scat Daddy, Street Sense, Corinthian, English Channel. etc., by earnings and in 2012 he is the number three Second Crop sire in Canada. So we really see a great deal of potential in this phenomenally-bred son of Storm Cat.”

Out of Welcome Surprise, a graded stakes winning half-sister to A.P. Indy, Mr. Sekiguchi is from the female family of 17 stallions who have sired Grade/Group 1 winners. Never worse than second with Beyers of 101, 96 and 91, Mr. Sekiguchi ran six furlongs in 1:08 2/5.

Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, who conditioned Mr. Sekiguchi, said upon his retirement, “Mr. Sekiguchi has a world of talent. He ran 1:08 2/5 (running a 101 Beyer) at Santa Anita and had the ability to be a top horse. It was unfortunate that a tibia injury forced him to the sidelines before he got a chance to win a major race.  Anyone that sees the horse will breed to him. He is that good looking, with the best pedigree in the stud book.”

Mr. Sekiguchi is expected to arrive in Saratoga by the Thanksgiving holiday. His stud fee for 2013 will be $2,500, live foal.
