Midway through the four-day Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October yearling sale, New York-breds are performing virtually on a par with the general population of the auction, while the male and female New York-bred toppers in Tuesday’s second session both cracked six-figures.

The average price for the 29 New York-bred yearlings that sold in the first two sessions of the auction was $31,448, slightly below the cumulative sale average of $34,833, while the $15,000 median was identical to the sale median. The buyback for New York-breds came in on the high end at 41%, as the RNA rate in the overall sale stands at 32.2%

So far the auction is getting mixed reviews from participants and Fasig-Tipton’s president and CEO, Boyd Browning Jr.’s comments followed suit. “On Monday,” Browning said, “we probably didn’t start off very strong, just the way the catalogue fell, and it took a while to get some enthusiasm going. And it felt better today [Tuesday], and I think we’ll see a similar marketplace the next two days. The good news is that the buyers are all complaining it’s not easy to buy a horse. The bad news is that the sellers are saying it’s not easy to sell a horse.”

The top-selling New York-bred yearling in session two was Hip 426, a bay colt by Tapizar foaled last February 24 who was bred by Fred W. Hertrich III. A $125,000 RNA at the Fasig-Tipton preferred New York-bred sale in Saratoga over the summer, the colt, who was offered in Kentucky by Taylor Made Sales Agency, Agent XXVIII, brought the identical price when hammered down to Purpoodock Bloodstock on Tuesday.

Hip 426 is the first offspring of Introvert, a winning daughter of Smarty Jones. She is a half-sister to six other winners, topped by Argentinian champion 2-year-old filly Forty Greeta, a stakes producer, and to Grade 2-winning sire Honorable Dillon. Introvert aborted her Paynter foal this year and has been bred to Exchange Rate.

The top filly of the session, Hip 415, also offered by Taylor Made, went to Mike Ryan, Agent for $100,000. Bred by Pine Ridge Stables, Ltd, the dark bay or brown filly is by Tale of the Cat out of stakes-placed Indian Rush, dam of New York-bred open stakes winner Harlan’s Honor. The filly’s third dam is stakes winner Secret Rhapsody, a stakes producer, as is her third dam Hear A Rhapsody.

The October Sale will conclude with sessions on Wednesday and Thursday each beginning at 10:00 a.m. Chick here to review upcoming New York-bred hips.
