Spendthrift Farm’s New York-based freshman sire Dublin, the Grade 1-winning juvenile by Afleet Alex, sired his first winner from his first starter when 2-year-old colt Dr Blarney turned in an impressive 3 1/2-length debut win Sunday at Monmouth.

Trained by Thomas S. McCooey, Jr for owner Alfred DiRico, the chestnut colt was sharp in the stretch of the five-furlong heat, widening his margin to win going away in 58.82 seconds over a fast local main track.

Dr Blarney was bred in Massachusetts by Joseph DiRico, and hails from the Capote mare Dr. Capote, a half-sister to multiple stakes winners Dr Disco and Dance Gal Dance.

On the track, Dublin scored his biggest win in the Hopeful S. (G1) as a 2-year-old just a month after impressively breaking his maiden in 1:09 2/5 at Saratoga. His Hopeful time of 1:23 2/5 was faster than that of his champion sire Afleet Alex, who also captured the Hopeful five years prior. At three, Dublin placed in all three major Kentucky Derby preps at Oaklawn Park, including the Arkansas Derby (G1), and retired with earnings of $438,949.

Dublin hails from the Storm Bird mare Classy Mirage, a Grade 1 winner and five-time graded winner in New York.

Dublin recently completed the 2015 breeding season as a Spendthrift stallion at Keane Stud in Amenia, NY where he stood for a 2015 fee of $6,500, and was a participant in Spendthrift’s Share The Upside and Breed Secure programs. He has 70 2-year-olds in his first crop.
