Incentives

New York Thoroughbred Breeding and Development Fund Corporation administers an awards and incentives program for thoroughbreds foaled in New York who race on New York tracks. The program,  which provides incentive awards to participants and purse ehancements for races resticted to New York-breds, was developed in 1973 to encourage the establishment of thoroughbred farms in New York that would protect and expand green space. In 2017, the Fund distributed more than $15 million in award payments to breeders, owners and stallion owners.

In 2017, a total of 55 stakes races restricted to registered New York-breds worth more than $7.6 million in purse money were scheduled at the three New York Racing Association racetracks and Finger Lakes. In addition, there are over 800 other races written each year at these tracks covering a wide range of conditions for registered New York-breds.

For registered New York stallions, the stallion owner continues to benefit financially beyond the standard stallion stud fees as the progeny race and earn purse money at New York racetracks. In addition to awards earned on a day-to-day basis, there is an annual New York Stallion Stakes Series worth $1,050,000 which consists of 8 stakes races resricted to New York-sired horses.
