The final significant yearling sale of the season kicked off Monday in Lexington and featured 32 horses that sold for six figures, including a New York-bred colt by Kantharos that brought $100,000.

Andrew Cary’s Cary Bloodstock signed for the top New York-bred Monday, picking up Hip 136 on behalf of Steve Landers Racing LLC. Bred by and foaled at Rhapsody Farm in Plymouth and consigned by Four Star Sales, agent, the colt is the first foal out of the New York-bred Emcee mare Natural Mist.

Rhapsody Farm purchased the mare, carrying the Kantharos colt in utero, for $25,000 at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky February mixed sale. Natural Mist is a half sister to 2015 New York Derby winner Force and both are from the family of Grade 2 winner Katahaula County, 2011 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner More Than Real and 2019 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf winner Structor.

The Kantharos colt was originally listed as sold for $28,000 to Blue Chip Farm in August at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga New York-bred yearling sale.

The sale of Hip 136 helped contribute to the positive results overall in the opening session, which saw increases in total receipts, average price and median along with a drop in the RNA rate.

Fasig-Tipton reported sales on 18 of the 21 New York-breds offered in the opening session for a total of $531,200, an average price of $29,511 and median of $20,000. Those numbers compared favorably to the opening session last year, when 11 New York-breds sold for $395,700, an average price of $35,973 and median of $7,500.

The second most expensive New York-bred and top filly went to Hip 347, a daughter of top freshman sire Practical Joke, on an $80,000 bid from Patillo Equine.

Bred by Hidden Lake Farm LLC and Recapture LLC, foaled at Hidden Lake Farm in Stillwater and consigned by Mulholland Springs, agent, the filly is out of the winning Street Sense mare Ruedelarose. The Practical Joke filly is a half-sister to the New York-bred 3-year-old Animal Kingdom filly Roxy’s Kingdom who has placed twice and sold for $13,000 at last year’s Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-year-olds in training sale.

The sale continues with the second of four sessions starting at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Lexington.
