Stretching out from 5 1/2 furlongs to one mile on turf around two turns, DARRS Inc.’s Dynaform mounted a furious late rally to mow down the front-runner, break his maiden and give his New York-based sire Micromanage his first progeny winner on Friday at Colonial Downs in New Kent County in Virginia.

Unveiled at Colonial Downs on August 9, Dynaform got strong support at the betting windows – sent off as the 2-1 favorite to go 5 1/2 furlongs over firm turf with Jose Valdivia, Jr. in the irons – but never really got into gear during an inside journey and finished a well-beaten eighth of nine for trainer Michael Stidham. Flash forward to his second start and the story could have not been more different.

Piloted by Horacio Karamanos, and sent off as the 5-2 second choice, Dynaform broke sharply, led until the approach to the clubhouse turn, then took back and settled at the rail in third, two lengths behind Determined Force who led field for three-quarters of a mile in 23.30, 47.86 and 1:13.06.

In the approach to the far turn it looked as if Dynaform’s trip was going to turn sour. Shuffled back to last as his rivals jockeyed for position, he switched out one path in the bend, came under a ride, and regained momentum. Meanwhile Perfect Daydream rallied to the lead after a four-wide move in the turn.

Splitting horses just before the furlong marker, Dynaform advanced into second and, with three lengths still to make up on Perfect Daydream, found another gear. In the final 100 yards the gelding made a determined dash on the outside to make up the deficit, and nailed the leader at the wire to get the victory in a final time of 1:39.48.

Bred by Sugar Maple Farm and H. Lewis Rapaport, Dynaform is out of Miss Blarney Stone, a multiple winner by Dynaformer out of stakes winner Bedside Manner (Dr. Blum), who was bred in New York by the same connections. Miss Blarney Stone has produced stakes performers Irish Sweepstakes and Begginer. James Bredin Bloodstock purchased Dynaform as short yearling at the 2018 Keeneland January sale for $16,000. Miss Blarney Stone has a weanling filly by Connect and was bred in 2019 to Practical Joke.

Micromanage (Medaglia d’Oro), a graded stakes winner for Repole Stable, has 38 foals of racing age and stands at Rockridge Stud in Hudson, where his 2009 fee was $4,000. A juvenile debut winner at Saratoga in 2012, he won at distances from 7 furlongs to 1 3/4 miles over four campaigns and posted five triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures.

His five stakes wins are headed by the Grade 3 Skipaway, which he won at four. Micromanage retired with a record of seven wins, four seconds and six thirds from 30 starts and earnings of $790,551. His dam Catnip (Flying Paster) issues from the female family of Hennessy.
