Scuttlebuzz extends streak in Elusive Quality

[1]

Scuttlebuzz wins for fourth time in five starts, and in stakes debut, in Saturday’s Elusive Quality at Belmont Park. NYRA Photo.

Rudy Rodriguez made an equipment change last fall, hoping it would do the trick and put Scuttlebuzz on the path to more success.

The move paid off in a big way, first when the gelding by The Factor won a 6-furlong state-bred turf allowance-optional last September and again Saturday when he upset open company in the $100,000 Elusive Quality Stakes at Belmont Park.

“You can see he’s a little more comfortable in the morning with the extension blinker when he’s breezing,” said Rodriguez, who trains Scuttlebuzz for owner La Marca Stable. “I use the same extension blinker in the afternoon and it keeps him from drifting and losing his momentum. By covering it up, it keeps him straight.”

Scuttlebuzz stayed straight through the stretch in the 7-furlong Elusive Qualify, picking off tiring foes to win by a length over Therapist and give New York-breds a 1-2 finish in the second stakes of the Belmont spring-summer meeting. Javier Castellano rode Scuttlebuzz to victory in 1:21.45 over the firm Widener Turf Course.

“I really liked the way he did it,” Castellano said. “I knew there was a lot of pace in the race and he’s usually the type of horse who likes to come from behind. We make a great combination. I get along with the horse and I rode him last time and won on him.

“Today, I took my time and had a lot of patience to come from behind horses. It was a good run and Rudy did a great job and gave me the opportunity. It was better horses today and he stepped up in class. He showed up today.”

Scuttlebuzz improved to 4-for-5 since the addition extension blinker in September and 7-for-17 overall with $348,570 in earnings.

A $160,000 purchase at the 2019 OBS April sale of 2-year-olds in training, Scuttlebuzz joined Rodriguez’s string last April after being claimed for $30,000.

Bred by Lawrence Goichman and a half-brother to stakes winner and the multiple graded-stakes placed Runaway Rumour, Scuttlebuzz won the Elusive Quality in his 2022 debut. He added the stakes to back-to-back victories to end his 2021 campaign in open allowance and allowance-optional events going 6 furlongs on the grass at Aqueduct.

“We were looking for a race for him at Aqueduct and it was a little quick back for us,” Rodriguez said of picking the Elusive Quality for Scuttlebuzz’s comeback. “This was the only race I saw for us. I’m not sure about going to a longer race now. We’ll keep him short.”

Scuttlebuzz is the second foal out of the stakes-placed Elusive Quality mare Elusive Rumour. When he sold as Hip 1200[2] at the 2019 OBS April sale his older 3-year-old half-sister Myhartblongstodaddy as a winner as a 3-year-old in 2018. The pedigree continues to improve thanks to Myhartblongstodaddy, now a multiple stakes winner and earner of $442,966; and Runaway Rumour, an earner of $257,250 with a stakes win and three stakes placings.

Elusive Rumour is also the dam of the 3-year-old New York-bred More Than Ready filly Ripe for Mischief, a $75,000 purchase at last year’s OBS April sale, and the 2-year-old New York-bred Oscar Performance colt Lachaise. Elusive Rumour is also the dam of a New York-bred yearling filly by Oscar Performance and she was bred to Authentic last season.

Ny Traffic runs to odds in Affirmed Success

[1]

Ny Traffic improved to 3-for-3 at Belmont in Friday’s Affirmed Success Stakes. NYRA Photo.

Ny Traffic stayed unbeaten at Belmont Park and unbeaten against fellow New York-breds Friday in the first stakes of Big Sandy’s spring-summer meeting with a front-running victory in the $97,000 Affirmed Success.

The 5-year-old gray son of Cross Traffic won the Affirmed Success by 3 3/4 lengths under Jose Ortiz for trainer Saffie Joseph Jr., adding the 6-furlong stakes to his victory in last year’s Hudson Handicap on Empire Showcase Day and an allowance-optional last spring. The three wins have come by a combined 19 1/4 lengths.

“He just loves this track,” said John Fanelli, who co-owns Ny Traffic with Cash is King LLC, LC Racing LLC, Paul Braverman and Team Hanley.

Ny Traffic came into the Affirmed Success off a distant fifth in his only start of 2022, the Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Mile March 5. Bettors weren’t put off by Ny Traffic’s effort and sent him off as the 2-5 favorite against his four opponents in the Affirmed Success.

Ny Traffic broke a head quicker than his rivals and Ortiz wasted no time putting him on the lead from the inside post.

“He’s known for not liking the kickback, so I was very aggressive with him out of the one-hole,” Ortiz said. “I knew [Reggae Music Man] had speed and the other horse outside of me [Bank On Shea] had speed, so I knew I had to move forward. I couldn’t break thinking about it or be 50-50. I went all in and it played out well.”

Ny Traffic led Lobsta by a half-length through the opening quarter-mile in :22.66 and maintained that advantage into the far turn. They led by a length over Lobsta through a half in :45.50 while Reggae Music Man and Bank On Shea tried to chase behind the top pair.

Ny Traffic dispatched the stubborn Lobsta in the lane and opened up approaching the eighth pole with a 2 1/2-length lead. They widened from there as Lobsta held a clear second, 6 ¾ lengths in front of Reggae Music Man with Bank On Shea fourth and Hold the Salsa fifth. Ny Traffic won in 1:09.54.

“I had a nice comfortable lead with him and he finished up very well,” Ortiz said. “I had a lot of horse underneath me passing the wire. He’s a very nice New York-bred.”

Bred by Brian Culnan and foaled at Gallagher’s Stud in Ghent, Ny Traffic is the first foal out of the winning New York-bred Graeme Hall mare Mamie Reilly. Mamie Reilly’s second foal, the 4-year-old Normandy Invasion gelding Purple Hearted, improved to 2-4-2 from 13 starts with a bankroll of $142,750 after a fourth in a starter allowance at Aqueduct April 10. He also finished to eventual New York-bred Grade 1 winner Americanrevolution in last year’s New York Derby at Finger Lakes.

A $27,000 RNA at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic May sale of 2-year-olds in training, Ny Traffic started his career at Parx Racing with Harold Wyner before being transferred to Joseph’s South Florida string.

Ny Traffic put his name in the Triple Crown picture in 2020 with a victory for Joseph at Gulfstream before placings in the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby, Grade 3 Matt Winn and Grade 1 Haskell Invitational. He finished eighth in the Kentucky Derby and ninth in the Preakness Stakes. Freshened after that effort, Ny Traffic returned in 2021 with his two Belmont wins along with a second in the Grade 2 Salvator Mile at Monmouth.

“Cutting back in distance, I was confident he’d have the stamina to stay on,” Joseph said. “Once he made the lead, I felt much more comfortable. I was very uneasy with the draw and didn’t think he would have that kind of speed. Once he broke on the lead, I felt much more confident.

“This horse likes New York and Belmont. Hopefully, it’s the start of a good meet for us. We’re going to have 16 horses there and we’re thankful to be there.”

Joseph said the $200,000 Commentator at 1 mile May 30 at Belmont Park would most likely be Ny Traffic’s next start.

Galaxina pulls upset in Park Avenue

[1]

By Melissa Bauer-Herzog

New York-bred Galaxina lived up to her sire Giant Surprise’s name on Sunday when pulling off a 24-1 upset in the Park Avenue division of the New York Stallion Stakes Series at Aqueduct.

The Ascendant Farms homebred came into the race nearly two months after breaking her maiden in her previous start. That race gave trainer James Bond the cue he needed to run against a salty field where all but one other runner had earned black type. Galaxina’s introduction to stakes company was made fractionally easier when heavy favorite Yo Cuz stumbled out of the gate and was last in the early running.

On the other end of the field, Galaxina made her presence known right away when going straight up to challenge Starship Laoban for the lead. Jockey Trevor McCarthy eased up on that challenge down the backstretch and let Galaxina gallop in second just behind the leader. It looked like Starship Laoban may run away with the victory around the turn until Galaxina resumed her challenge down the stretch.

By the time they hit the final furlong, Galaxina had her nose in front and she steadily pulled away to win by a length over Starship Laoban with Bank On Anna third, 2 1/2 lengths behind the top two. After her early race mishap, Yo Cuz worked hard to catch the leaders but settled for fourth.

“She has been training really good and feeling really good coming into this,” said McCarthy, who also won Saturday’s Times Square division of the NYSSS on Kazmike. “I give a lot of credit to the Bonds. She’s a filly that probably looked a little under class, but with the right trip today and the way she’s been training, I expected her to run really good.”

Foaled at Rockridge Stud in Hudson, Galaxina is a second generation homebred for Ascendant, which purchased her granddam Lokoya Red for $28,000 at the 2015 OBS Fall Mixed Sale in foal to Saarland. Bred to Lawyer Ron in his second season at stud three years later, the mare produced Galaxina’s dam Strange Magic, who never made it to the track but has produced two runners with Galaxina her first winner.

The dam of one winner from three runners, Lokoya Red is a half-sister to 2008 champion turf female Forever Together, who has produced Grade 3-placed Truly Together and stakes-placed Smart Together. Galaxina is the fifth stakes performer under her first three dams with Lokoya Red also a half-sister to the multiple stakes-placed Princess Patricia.

Galaxina’s fourth dam is the stakes winning and successful broodmare Wedding Picture, who has 16 stakes winners under her name. Wedding Picture received her second stakes-winning update in as many days after her Group 1 winning great-granddaughter Bella Vella won the Group 3 R N Irwin Stakes in Australia on Saturday while making her first start in over a year.

Closer to home, Galaxina’s dam Strange Magic has a 2-year-old New York-bred Frank Conversation colt named Incantation and a yearling colt by the same stallion. She wasn’t bred in 2021. Twenty-year-old Lakoya Red also joined the New York-bred program in 2017 and has a 2-year-old New York-bred Temple City colt to come. She was barren to Destin in 2021 and not bred for this year.

Bank Heist colt Kazmike wins NYSS Times Square

[1]

By Melissa Bauer-Herzog

Peter Kazamias’s homebred Kazmike broke his maiden in a huge way Saturday when he took out the Times Square division of the New York Stallion Stakes Series at Aqueduct.

Making his third start after debuting March 5, the 3-year-old Bank Heist colt had put in promising works for trainer Dimitrios Synnefias in recent weeks, breezing a bullet :47.50 at Penn National Race Course two works back March 22. That convinced his connections to take a look at the 6 ½-furlong Times Square – a move that paid off with a $110,000 payday for the winner.

Breaking from the widest gate in the field of seven, Kazmike shot to the front within a sixteenth of the break and quickly opened up a length on the field. There was a small group of horses behind the leader as he registered a first quarter in :22.61 with that trio of Mister Larry, Unique Unions and 3-10 favorite Barese deciding to make their move at the leader around the turn.

Kazmike handled the pressure with aplomb, with only one rival sticking with him as they ran down the stretch. Unique Unions tried to get in front throughout the lane but Kazmike edged away in the final sixteenth to win by 1 1/4 lengths in 1:18.70. Barese, fifth last time out in the Grade 2 Wood Memorial, finished 5 1/4 lengths back in third with Mo Dancin fourth.

“He’s kind of a bit of a grinder so I just wanted to let him get into stride,” winning jockey Trevor McCarthy said. “I wanted to make sure I got his lead changed. Last time he didn’t want to switch and he’s one that really likes to run in the bridle. I just wanted to get a good hand ride – get a good rhythm before I went to sticking on him and he really gave me a second gear when I kind of switched sticks and he kind of moseyed on up.”

By Kazamias’ resident stallion Bank Heist, Kazmike was born on his owner’s Kaz Hill Farm in Middletown and is out of the 10-time winner and stakes-placed New York-bred Behrnik. That mare was owned and trained by Kazamias in the final race of her career after he claimed her for $25,000 at Aqueduct in June 2006. She would finish second in Monmouth Park in her sole start under his name before heading to the breeding shed.

She has been a successful broodmare for her owner, producing seven winners from eight foals. Kazmike is a full brother to the two-time stakes winner Behrnik’s Bank with another half-sibling winning six races and a third winning four.

“Right now, I have about 40 mares,” Kazamias said of his New York-bred breeding program. “We just got a new stallion that we’re breeding a lot of mares to, Name Changer, by Uncle Mo. We expect to do well by him, the babies are fantastic.”

Saturday’s winner is a third-generation New York-bred, with Kazmike’s granddam Lady Mondegreen stakes placed in the 1995 New York Oaks. That mare went on to have five winners from her five to win but multiple daughters producing winners in the U.S., Italy, and Puerto Rico.

Behrnik has a 2-year-old New York-bred full brother to Kazmike named Money Making Kaz. She was one of 25 mares to visit Name Changer last year in his first season at stud and produced a colt Feb. 11 in New York.

A daughter of the ill-fated New York-based sire The Lieutenant commanded a final bid of $255,000 Friday to earn top-priced New York-bred filly honors at the OBS April sale of 2-year-olds in training in Ocala.

D J Stable LLC purchased Hip 1123[2], a bay filly out of the winning Street Boss mare Sugar Boss. Bred by and foaled at Sequel Stallions New York in Hudson and consigned by Becky Thomas’ Sequel Bloodstock, agent, the filly turned in a quarter-mile breeze in :20.4 during presale workouts.

A half-brother to Triple Crown winner Justify, The Lieutenant stood the 2019 season at Sequel Stallions New York in Hudson before heading to Peru for the Southern Hemisphere breeding season. He was one of four stallions killed by marauders at a raid on Haras Barlovento in December 2019. The Lieutenant sired 34 foals in his lone Northern Hemisphere crop, including the $255,000 filly that sold Friday.

The filly is the fourth foal out of Sugar Boss, who is the dam of stakes-placed winner El Hefe and three-time winner Lucky Lizzie, both New York-breds.

The sale of The Lieutenant filly sparked another big day for New York-breds at the final session of the OBS April sale. Eight sold for six figures on the final day, bringing the haul to 23 over the four sessions. OBS reported sales on 57 of the 69 New York-breds through the ring for $6,334,000, an average price of $111,123.

During Friday’s final session, 15 of the 18 New York-breds through the ring sold for $1,911,000, an average price of $127,400.

A half-brother to recent Grade 1 Madison Stakes winner Just One Time and stakes winner and $141,678-earner Black Stetson, the colt was consigned by Eddie Woods, agent. Bred by Spruce Lane Farm et al, he was a $150,000 purchase by Woods Edge Farm at last year’s Keeneland September yearling sale. The Goldencents colt is the seventh foal out of Ida Clark, who was purchased in foal to Outwork for $60,000 by McMahon & Hill Bloodstock, agent, at the 2019 Keeneland January horses of all ages sale.

A colt by 2021 leading New York sire Central Banker and a filly by Bernardini were among the quartet of six-figure New York-breds that sold during the opening session of the OBS April sale of 2-year-olds in training Tuesday in Ocala.

The haul of six-figure New York-breds started early – with the third juvenile through the ring bringing $120,000 – and continued throughout the strong opening session. OBS reported nine of the 17 New York-breds offered were sold Tuesday for $922,000, an average price of $102,444.

Hip 93[2], a filly by Bernardini out of stakes winner Above Fashion, led the way on a bid of $250,000 from West Bloodstock, agent for Repole Stable Inc. Consigned by Niall Brennan Stables, agent, the filly breezed an eighth in :10.1 during presale workouts.

Bred by Godolphin and Caliburn Farm LLC and foaled at Shorthill Farm in Ballston Spa, the filly was purchased by Crown Investments for $90,000 at last year’s Fasig-Tipton Saratoga New York-bred yearling sale out of the Fort Christopher’s Thoroughbreds consignment.

Above Fashion, a 9-year-old daughter of Paddy O’Prado, won three of 13 starts and earned $188,590 over two seasons. She’s the dam of one winner – the Star Guitar filly Star Fashion – from her first two foals. Above Fashion is also the dam of a New York-bred yearling filly by Bolt d’Oro that sold for $72,000 at last year’s Fasig-Tipton Kentucky fall mixed sale. She was bred to Vino Rosso in 2021.

Mathis Stable LLC purchased the Central Banker colt, sold as Hip 219[4] out of the de Meric Sales consignment, for $180,000. A full brother to multiple New York-bred stakes winner Sassy Agnes, he breezed in :10 during presale workouts.

Bred by McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds LLC and Jamey Gibson and foaled at McMahon of Saratoga in Saratoga Springs, the colt is out of the unraced Stormy Atlantic mare Bullish Sentiment. A full sister to Grade 3 winner Stormy’s Majesty, Bullish Sentiment is also the dam of seven-time winner and $330,870-earner Honey Money, a New York-bred daughter of Central Banker; and recent first-time starter Kingstown, a 4-year-old son of Central Banker. Sassy Agnes won or placed in five of seven starts, collecting three stakes wins in the fall of 2018, and earned $198,782.

Bullish Sentiment is also the dam of a yearling New York-bred colt by Blame and a filly by the late former leading New York-based freshman sire Laoban born March 29. The yearling and newborn were co-bred by Gibson and McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds. Central Banker stands for $7,500 at McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds in Saratoga Springs.

Hip 5[5], a colt by Good Samaritan and the third horse in the ring Tuesday, started things off for the Empire State on a $120,000 bid from L.E.B., agent for West Point Thoroughbreds. Consigned by Top Line Sales LLC, agent, the colt out of the winning Candy Ride mare Uman Candy breezed an eighth in :10.1. Bred by and foaled at Saratoga Glen Farm in Schuylerville, the colt is the third foal out of Uman Candy. He was a $62,000 RNA at last year’s Fasig-Tipton Saratoga New York-bred yearling sale.

Hip 172[6], a colt by Kantharos who breezed an eighth in :10.1, was purchased by Joe Hardoon, agent for Gold Square LLC, for $140,000 out of the Paul Sharp consignment. Bred by SGO Thoroughbreds LLC and foaled at Irish Hill and Dutchess Views Stallions in Stillwater, the colt is the fourth foal out of the Midnight Lute mare Bella Cara. He sold for $80,000 to Whetstone Farm at last year’s Fasig-Tipton Saratoga New York-bred yearling sale.

The sale continues with the second of four sessions at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

‘Loveable loser’ Zippy Chippy dies at 31

Zippy Chippy, arguably one of racing’s most recognizable names during his career for his penchant for doing nothing but lose, died Saturday morning at Old Friends at Cabin Creek in Greenfield Center.

Zippy Chippy, a gelding by Compliance who made 100 losing starts in his career, lived at the satellite of Kentucky’s Old Friends Thoroughbred Retirement since April 2010. Under the guidance of Cabin Creek owner and manager JoAnn Pepper, Zippy Chippy settled into retirement and a peaceful retirement with a paddock mate, fellow New York-bred gelding Red Down South. In recent years, they were the stars of Cabin Creek.

“Zippy was our main character here, and he lived his life his way,” said Cabin Creek’s Pepper. “He was so content, and would not do anything he wasn’t in the mood for. He taught me so much about life, and I’ll miss him forever.”

Campaigned by owner-trainer Felix Montserrate – who acquired the horse in 1995 by trading a Ford Truck – Zippy Chippy started his career on the NYRA circuit. He lost his first seven starts at Belmont Park and Aqueduct before running primarily at Finger Lakes from late 1994 to September 1998. He earned plenty of fame along the way, for his cantankerous nature and for putting on carnival exhibitions where he once raced against a baseball player.

In 2000 People Magazine even voted Zippy Chippy one of the year’s “Most Intriguing Characters.”

Banned from numerous track due to such antics as refusing to break from the gate, Zippy Chippy made 11 of his final 14 starts at Northampton in Massachusetts. He officially retired racing in 2004 and had a brief second career as an outrider’s pony at his home track, Finger Lakes. Bred by Capritaur Farm and out of the Buckfinder mare Listen Lady, Zippy Chippy finished second eight times and third 12 times, earning $30,834 over 11 seasons.

“Zippy found his greatest success as a retiree,” said Old Friends founder and President Michael Blowen. “Joann and all of the volunteers at Cabin Creek adored him, and he attracted hundreds of fans to the farm each year. He was finally a star.

“Our thanks to Joann and Mark Pepper and everyone at Cabin Creek for the wonderful care they gave Zippy. I know he will be deeply missed by all.”
