Two in one, two in another. That’s the scenario Friday at Del Mar with a quartet of New York-breds looking to add their names to the list of Breeders’ Cup winners from the Empire State as Future Stars Friday kicks off the two-day World Championships.

The action starts in the first championship event of the weekend with Derrynane and Run Curtis Run in the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint. The duo of Dakota Gold and Coinage close the day in the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf.

Derrynane and Run Curtis Run drew outside for the 5-furlong Juvenile Turf Sprint, posts 11 and 12, respectively, in the field of 2-year-olds. Waterville Lake Stable’s homebred Derrynane takes on males for the first time off a victory in the Woodbine Cares Stakes for Christophe Clement. The daughter of Quality Road is 12-1 on the line for the Juvenile Turf Sprint with regular rider Joel Rosario named.

“She’s got speed,” Clement’s assistant Christophe Lorieul said this week. “I really like her race at Woodbine. It was on a similar kind of surface and racetrack with tight turns. There was plenty of speed in front of her and she came closing at the end. She ran a very good race that day. I don’t know how much she beat, but she looked very good doing it.”

Foaled at Berkshire Stud in Pine Plains, Derrynane won her debut July 22 at Saratoga Race Course before a fifth on yielding ground there in the Bolton Landing Stakes.

“For a 2-year-old she is amazing,” Lorieul said. “Wherever you take her, she never leaves any feed and she always acts very mature. That’s a plus.”

Michael Dubb’s and Michael Caruso’s Run Curtis Run, 20-1 on the line with Luis Saez named, comes off a second in the Grade 3 Futurity Oct. 10 at Belmont Park. Bred by Larry Goichman and foaled at Edition Farm in Hyde Park, the son of Summer Front won the Rick Violette Stakes on the dirt at Saratoga in his second start for trainer Mike Maker.

D. J. Stable’s and Chester and Mary Broman’s Coinage also ran in the Rick Violette, finishing third in his third start, before Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse moved the Tapit colt to the grass. He won the Grade 3 With Anticipation late in the Saratoga meet before a troubled third behind Dakota Gold and Royal Spirit in the $500,000 Nownownow Stakes Sept. 26 at Monmouth Park.

Casse hopes for a better outcome both before and during the 1-mile Juvenile Turf.

“Tough post (13), but he’s a much better horse than he ran last time,” Casse said. “He got bothered. We shipped over that morning. At Monmouth you have to walk up and down on the track and they had kids running and jumping and screaming. It got him so wound up and then he wasn’t good in the gate.”

Florent Geroux takes over aboard Coinage, the first foal out of the Broman’s Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint winner Bar of Gold. Foaled at Chestertown Farm in Chestertown, Coinage went through the ring at last year’s Keeneland September yearling sale and was purchased by Len Green’s D.J. Stable for $450,000 with the Bromans staying in for an ownership stake.

“That horse, if he runs his Saratoga race back they have to beat him,” Casse said. “Could have had a better post but what am I going to do. I think Flo is going to suit him well. He reminds me a lot of Catch a Glimpse, my filly that won the Breeders’ Cup (Juvenile Fillies Turf) and Flo rode her. That’s one of the reasons I put him on.”

Dakota Gold looks to run back to his victory in the Nownownow Stakes in Friday’s Juvenile Turf. Susie Raisher Photo.

Dakota Gold, a son of leading New York sire Freud bred by Sequel Thoroughbreds and Ron Bowden, drew post 3 for the Juvenile Turf. Pegged at 8-1 on the early line, Dakota Gold puts his 2-for-2 record on the line in the 1-mile stakes.

Owned by Reeves Thoroughbred Racing and trained by Danny Gargan, Dakota Gold won the Nownownow by 2 1/2 lengths and reunites with Luis Saez, who rode the colt to a 4 1/2-length victory in his debut in a 5 1/2-furlong off-the-turf maiden Sept. 2 at Saratoga. An $83,000 weanling purchase at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga fall mixed sale, Dakota Gold was foaled at The New Hill Farm in Hoosick Falls.

The four New York-bred runners look to join the previous three Breeders’ Cup winners from the Empire State.

London Bridge became the first when he took the Breeders’ Cup Marathon in 2013. Dayatthespa followed that win a year later in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf on the way to winning the Eclipse Award for champion turf female. Bar of Gold added her name to the list in 2017.

The Future Stars Friday card features five Breeders’ C up races, starting with the Juvenile Turf Sprint at 5:50 p.m. ET through the Grade 1 Juvenile Turf at 8:30 p.m. Future Stars Friday will be broadcast on the NBC Sports Network from 5-9 p.m. ET Friday.
