A filly from the third crop of Belmont Stakes winner Tonalist commanded a final bid of $250,000 Friday to lead all New York-breds sold at the OBS June sale of 2-year-olds in training and horses of racing age.

Patrick Lawley-Wakelin, agent, purchased the filly, selling as Hip 683[2]. Bred by Robert “Shel” Evans and foaled a Berkshire Stud in Pine Plains, the filly is the first foal out of the multiple stakes-winning Successful Appeal mare Rapid Rhythm. She breezed an eighth in :10.2 during presale workouts.

Consigned by Six K’s Training & Sales LLC, agent, the filly was reported sold for $25,000 to Michael Hernon Bloodstock at last year’s Keeneland September yearling sale. She’s the first foal out of the $278,286-earner, who is also the dam of a yearling Kentucky-bred filly by Tonalist and a 2021 colt by Palace Malice, both bred by Evans.

The final session Friday also saw another six-figure sale in Hip 675[3], a colt by McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds’ Central Banker purchased by Brothers Two for $110,000. One of six New York-breds that sold for $100,000 or more during the three sessions, the colt is the sixth foal out of the Quiet American mare Quite the Sis.

Bred by and foaled at Rhapsody Farm in Plymouth, the colt was sold for $10,000 to Luis Franco at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October yearling sale. Consigned at the OBS June sale by Jesse Hoppel’s Coastal Equine LLC, agent, the colt breezed a quarter-mile in :21.2 during presale workouts.

OBS reported sales on nine of the 14 New York-breds offered during the final session for $533,500, an average price of $59,278. Overall, 66 of the 90 New York-breds offered during the sale for a total of $2,053,700, an average price of $31,117.

Brooklyn Strong draws rail in Pegasus

Mark Schwartz and Danny Velazquez considered returning Brooklyn Strong to the allowance ranks after the colt ran fifth in the Grade 2 Wood Memorial and 15th in the Kentucky Derby, but when the Pegasus Stakes at Monmouth Sunday came up light – with one notable exception – they decided to enter the New York-bred in the $150,000 stakes.

Brooklyn Strong drew the rail in the five-horse field, which is headlined by Kentucky Derby runner-up Mandaloun, who could become the declared winner any day now after Medina Spirit is presumably disqualified for a failed drug test.

“Danny says he’s ready, so we’re going,” said Schwartz. “We wouldn’t be putting him in if Danny didn’t think he was ready.”

Schwartz and Velazquez also had hoped to run Brooklyn Strong, a 3-year-old gelding by Wicked Strong out of the Medaglia d’Oro mare Riviera Chic, in the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes last Saturday, but when the horse turned in a mediocre work two weeks prior and didn’t bounce back the way Velazquez had hoped, they changed plans.

“We’re going to come in ready. All I want is a clean trip for once,” said Velazquez, whose horse had trouble in the Wood and the Derby. “We drew the rail, but it’s not the same as getting kickback from 13 or 14 horses in his face (like the Derby).”

Brooklyn Strong is 8-1 on the morning line in a race that offers a free entry to the Grade 1 Haskell Stakes for the top two finishers. Mandaloun is the heavy favorite at 3-5, and he may go off at even lower odds. Dr. Jack, who is 2-for-2 lifetime, Gotham Stakes winner Weyburn and Maryland-based Lugamo, who was an also-ran in the UAE Derby in Dubai in March, round out the field.

“I can’t get him any fitter,” said Velazquez, who was very pleased with Brooklyn Strong’s workout at Parx Racing last Saturday, when he went 5 furlongs in :59.91 under Abner Adorno, who will ride him in the Pegasus.

“Abner rode him when he broke his maiden and he knows him better than anybody.” Velazquez said. “He’s excited.”

It will be the second graded stakes mount for Adorno, who rode New Commission to a fifth in the Grade 3 Withers Stakes at Aqueduct in 2020.

“Abner is underrated. He’s a good jockey,” Schwartz said.

Schwartz and Velazquez are hoping to see the return of the Brooklyn Strong that closed his 2-year-old campaign by winning the Grade 2 Remsen Stakes at Aqueduct while recording a 94 Beyer Speed Figure.

Brooklyn Strong was bred by Cheryl Prudhomme and her husband, Dr. Michael Gallivan, and foaled at their Shamrock Hill Farm in Fort Edward. Prudhomme and Gallivan sold him as a weanling. Schwartz bought him for $5,000 at the 2020 OBS Spring 2-year-old sale.

After breaking his maiden at Delaware Park, Brooklyn Strong ran third in the Bertram Bongard and won the Sleepy Hollow. He took on open company in the Remsen and got up just before the wire to earn 10 Derby qualifying points, which turned out to be enough to get him into the field.

Constitution filly vaults into top spot at OBS June

A daughter of Constitution brought $175,000 during Thursday’s second session of the OBS June sale of 2-year-olds and horses of racing age to climb into the top spot among all New York-breds to sell at the final significant juvenile auction of the season.

Blue Lion Thoroughbreds signed for the filly, selling as Hip 469[2], out of the consignment of Pick View LLC, agent.

Bred by Newtownanner Stud and foaled at Jack’s Farm on the Hill in Millbrook, the filly is the sixth foal out of the winning Giant’s Causeway mare Lady Aphrodite. The filly, a $95,000 RNA at last year’s Fasig-Tipton Select Yearling Showcase, breezed an eighth in :10.2 during presale workouts.

Lady Aphrodite is the dam of four winners – all Newtownanner New York-breds – including the Flatter gelding Mr. Massena who won three races and earned $146,325. Lady Aphrodite, sold in foal to Violence for $37,000 to Southern Oak Farm at this year’s Fasig-Tipton Kentucky February mixed sale, did not produce a foal in 2020. She delivered the Violence foal, a filly, on March 13.

McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds’ Central Banker continued his strong spring when Braun English Wolf went to $100,000 for Hip 603[3], a colt by the leading New York-based sire, during the second session.

Bred by Carl Bennett and consigned by Brandon and Ali Rice’s RiceHorse Stable, the colt is out of the Pleasant Tap mare Nine Taps and was foaled at Hilltop Stables in Deposit. The third foal out of the mare, he breezed an eighth in :10 during presale workouts.

RiceHorse Stable purchased the colt as a weanling for $2,000 at the 2019 Keeneland November breeding stock sale. He then was reported sold for $20,000 at last year’s OBS October yearling sale before being withdrawn from this year’s OBS March sale of selected 2-year-olds in training.

OBS reported sales on 27 of the 40 New York-breds offered in the session for $644,200, an average price of $23,859. Four New York-breds have sold for $100,000 or more through the first two sessions.

The OBS June sale continues Friday with the third and final session at 10:30 a.m. ET.
