The New York Racing Association ran its first two juvenile races of the season for state-bred 2-year-olds and a pair of Kentucky shippers came away with victories at Belmont Park.

CJ Thoroughbreds’ Miss Alacrity started things off Thursday with a 10-length romp in her debut for trainer Wesley Ward before Paradise Farms Corp.’s and David Staudacher’s Barese followed suit Friday with a come-from-behind win for trainer Mike Maker.

Miss Alacrity and jockey John Velazquez overcame a bump at the start, chased early leader She’s a Fast One around the far turn and took over near the quarter pole en route to her sharp debut victory over Saratoga Kisses. The daughter of Munnings out of multiple graded stakes winner Just Jenda won in :58.93 as the 2-5 favorite.

Bred and foaled at Milfer Farm Inc. in Unadilla, Miss Alacrity is the fourth foal and fourth winner out of the Menifee mare Just Jenda. Milfer bought Just Jenda, the winner of eight of 17 starts and $750,680, in foal to Munnings for $32,000 at the 2018 Keeneland November breeding stock sale. She foaled Miss Alacrity about three months later.

Miss Alacrity was reported sold for $150,000 as a weanling to Canaan Creek Stables as Hip 1510[2] at the 2019 Keeneland November breeding stock sale then did not sell on a final bid of $180,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Select Yearling Showcase in September 2020. She prepped for her debut with Ward’s string at Keeneland Race Course.

Just Jenda’s first foal, the Proud Citizien mare Jenda’s Agenda, won the 2017 Caesar’s Wish Stakes at Laurel Park and four of eight starts overall for $173,475 in earnings. Her other winners are Just Old School (2015 gelding by Old Fashioned) and Just Perfection (2016 filly by Majesticperfection). Just Jenda is the dam of a New York-bred yearling filly by Destin and was bred to Palace Malice last year.

Barese, 2-year-old son of Laoban bred by Sequel Thoroughbreds and Lakland Farm, scores maiden win in debut Friday at Belmont Park. Chelsea Durand/NYRA Photo.

Barese, a son of former leading New York freshman sire Laoban, went to the post of his debut at even-money. He and Irad Ortiz Jr. tracked behind front-runner Bali’s Shade around the far turn and into the stretch, before digging in late to run down the stubborn leader to win by a half-length. Coinage, the first foal out of New York-bred Horse of the Year and Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint winner Bar of Gold, finished three-quarters of a length back in third. Barese won in :58.37.

Trained for his debut at Churchill Downs Training Center, Barese was the second horse through the ring at the Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream sale of 2-year-olds in training in March. He breezed in :10.3 during presale workouts and sold as Hip 6[4] to Maker for $150,000.

Bred by Sequel Thoroughbreds and Lakland Farm and foaled at Sequel Stallions New York in Hudson, Barese is the third foal out of the unraced Successful Appeal mare Right Prevails. A full sister to Kentucky Derby runner-up and graded stakes winner Closing Argument, Right Prevails is also the dam of the 3-year-old Laoban filly Breakfastatbonnies, a winner in her debut Jan. 2 at Aqueduct and entered in a Belmont allowance race Saturday.

Sequel and Lakland also bred Right Prevails’ yearling filly by The Lieutenant and her 2021 foal, a colt by Mission Impazible born March 29.
