A half-sister to New York-bred champion Newly Minted commanded a final bid of $550,000 just about a quarter of the way through Monday’s opening session of the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic May sale of 2-year-olds in training in Timonium, Md.

Bloodstock agent Jacob West, bidding on behalf of owners Robert and Lawana Low, signed the ticket for Hip 72[2], a filly named Classy Edition from the first crop of champion and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Classic Empire out of the Bernardini mare Newbie.

Bred by Chester and Mary Broman and foaled at their Chestertown Farm in Chestertown, the filly was consigned by Becky Thomas’ Sequel Bloodstock, agent.

The bay filly is the fifth foal out of Newbie, a Broman homebred who was 2-1-2 in 20 starts with $114,306 in earnings on the NYRA circuit from 2011 to 2013. She’s out of the stakes-winning Grade 2-placed Cherkokee Run mare Changeisgonnacome, purchased by the Bromans for $320,000 at the 2008 Keeneland November breeding stock sale.

Newbie’s first two foals – Newly Minted and New Girl in Town – are winners.

Newly Minted, champion New York-bred 3-year-old filly in 2019 and a finalist for state-bred honors in the female sprinter and older dirt female divisions in 2020, won six of 12 starts with three seconds and $516,738 in earnings for Beach Haven Thoroughbreds. Sequel sold the daughter of Central Banker on behalf of the Bromans for $110,000 at the 2018 OBS April sale of 2-year-olds in training.

New Girl in Town, a daughter of Boys At Tosconova, compiled a record of 7-4-6 in 21 starts racing primarily at Finger Lakes with occasional stops at Aqueduct and Saratoga Race Course for the Bromans. She also placed in three stakes during her career.

Newbie is the dam of the unraced 3-year-old Speightstown filly Colonizer, who sold to Linda Rice, agent, for $150,000 at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga New York-bred yearling sale; and the 4-year-old Carpe Diem filly Coco Cookies, who sold for $160,000 at the 2019 OBS March 2-year-old sale and is winless in one start. She’s also the dam of an American Pharoah yearling colt.
