New York-bred fillies bring top dollar at OBS

The second session of the OBS Spring sale of 2-year-olds-in training resulted in another big day for New York-breds juveniles selling for $365,000 and $335,000 Wednesday in Ocala.

Hip 392[2], a Candy Ride filly who breezed in an eighth in :10 during presale workouts, became the most expensive New York-bred of the sale when hammered down to BSW/Crow, agent for First Row Partners on a bid of $365,000.

Consigned by de Meric Sales, the Joanne Nielsen-bred filly out of the winning Giant’s Causeway mare White Sangria was a $45,000 RNA at last fall’s Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearlings Showcase in Lexington. She is a second generation homebred with White Sangria also bred and raced exclusively in the Empire State, earning two wins and seven other on-the-board finishes in 16 starts for $121,788 in earnings. White Sangria has two foals older than this juvenile with both born in New York and son Selfmade earning his maiden victory in February.

White Sangria also has a yearling New York-bred filly by Exaggerator and visited Nyquist last year.

Hip 486[4], Artemis Agrotera’s Arrogate filly who also breezed in :10, ended the session as the sale’s second most expensive New York-bred after selling to D. J. Stable for $335,000.

Offered by Sequel Bloodstock as agent for breeders Chester and Mary Broman, the filly named Triple a Okay is the third out of her dual Grade 1-winning dam and is a third generation New York-bred. Artemis Agrotera is also the dam of New York stakes winner Chestertown and 2021 winner Teetotaler from her two foals to race.

Artemis Agrotera is one of three stakes horses for her New York-bred stakes-winning dam Indy Glory, who is a full sister to Grade 1 winner Stephen Got Even. Artemois Agrotera produced a New York-bred Into Mischief colt last year and returned to the stallion for her 2021 foal.

The third New York-bred of the day to bring six figures was Hip 356[5], a filly from the first crop of three-time New York Grade 1 winner Practical Joke out of Lemon Drop Kid mare Unicorn Kid who sold for $155,000 to Zach Madden. Offered by Top Line Sales, the filly is a half sister to Puerto Rican champion Pure Lemon and stakes winner Crafty Unicorn.

A $140,000 RNA at last October’s Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall yearling sale, the filly was bred by The New Hill Farm. Purchased for $14,000 at the 2014 Keeneland November breeding stock sale by Lansdown Thoroughbreds, Unicorn Kid had her first New York-bred in 2015 and was bred to Mitole last year.

Through two sessions of the four-day sale, 34 of the 45 New York-breds offered have sold for an average of $70,338 with five selling for over $100,000.

The sale continues at 10:30 a.m. with the third session Thursday when hips 609 to 912 are scheduled to go through the ring.
