A pair of New York-breds by Laoban who each breezed an eighth in :10 during presale workouts commanded six-figure bids to highlight the first day of selling Tuesday at the OBS Spring sale of 2-year-olds in training in Ocala.

Hip 237[2], a colt by Laoban and half-brother to six winners, sold for $240,000 to West Point Thoroughbreds and St. Stephen Stable to finish the session as the most expensive New York-bred. Bred by Mustang Farms, Inc., and consigned by Halcyon Hammock Farm, agent, the colt is out of the Tale of the Cat mare Starship Kitty. He was foaled at Sequel Thoroughbreds New York in Hudson.

Starship Kitty, a winner in maiden special weight company in 2009 at Calder Race Course and earner of $23,950, is the dam of stakes-placed winner and $298,579-earner Starlite Mission and five other winners. Starship Kitty is out of Starship Voodoo, an unraced daughter of Roar and half-sister to Grade 1 winner and stakes producer Voodoo Dancer.

[3]The other six-figure New York-bred sold Tuesday – Hip 4[4], a filly by Laoban – went through the ring in the opening minutes and was purchased by Donato Lanni, agent for Joe Bucci, for $150,000.

Consigned by Becky Thomas’ Sequel Bloodstock, agent, and bred by and foaled at her Sequel Thoroughbreds LLC, the filly is out of the Bernardini mare Paper Kite. A half-sister to Grade 2 winner Storm Mesa and stakes winner She Be Classy, Paper Kite is the dam of two winners led by $61,639-earner Saratoga Promise.

OBS reported sales on 17 of the 26 New York-breds offered for $1,032,500 during Tuesday’s opening session, an average of $60,735.

The sale continues at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday with hips 305 to 608 scheduled to go through the ring.
