A short yearling colt by More Than Ready foaled in New York commanded a final bid of $175,000 during Monday’s opening session of the Keeneland January horses of all ages sale in Lexington.

Bred by Kingsport Farm, LLC, and foaled at Fort Christopher’s Thoroughbreds in Fort Edward, the colt sold as Hip 168 to Rosemont Farm 2020, LLC. Consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent, the colt is a half brother to an unnamed 2-year-old Kentucky-bred filly by Malibu Moon also bred by Kingsport Farm.

Kingsport Farm purchased Brandy, a winner of one of four starts for $23,045, in foal to Malibu Moon for $470,000 at the 2018 Keeneland November breeding stock sale.

The More Than Ready colt finished the day as one of two short yearlings that sold for six figures, along with Hip 342, a colt by Laoban who brought a bid of $120,000 from Cavalier Bloodstock.

Bred by McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds and Dean Purdom, foaled at McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds in Saratoga Springs and consigned by Hunter Valley Farm, agent, the colt is out of the unraced Freud mare Making a Point. Making a Point is the dam of the winning full siblings Moonachie and M J Power, both by Central Banker and co-bred by McMahon of Saratoga and Purdom.

The opening session saw seven of nine New York-bred or New York-foaled short yearlings sell for $555,000, an average price of $79,286. The session also featured two high-priced RNAs in Mrs. Orb and Ava K.

Mrs. Orb, winner of the La Verdad Stakes Jan. 3 at Aqueduct for Ruggeri Stable, Richard Coburn, Script R Farm and trainer and co-owner Mike Miceli, was listed as not sold on a final bid of $295,000. The 6-year-old daughter of Orb went through the ring with a record of 6-8-3 from 23 starts and earnings of $439,520.

Ava K., a 13-year-old daughter of Dixie Union selling as Hip 400D out of the St George Sales consignment, went back to the barn as a $220,000 RNA. A stakes winner and earner of $201,467, Ava K. was offered in foal to Uncle Mo. She’s the dam of two winners – Cairo Healer and Ava K’s Girl, both by Giant’s Causeway.
