Lookin At Lee joins roster at Irish Hill & Dutchess Views Stallions

Multiple stakes winner Lookin At Lee, second in the Kentucky Derby and fourth in the Preakness Stakes in 2017, has been retired and will enter stud in 2021 under the management of Irish Hill & Dutchess Views Stallions LLC in Saratoga, N.Y.

The 6-year-old son of Lookin At Lucky out of the Grade 3-placed Lanfuhr mare Capilano will stand his fist season for $6,500 LFSN.

The precocious Lookin At Lee broke his maiden in his second start at 2 and went on to earn his first black type win in the Ellis Park Juvenile Stakes. He then jumped directly into graded competition, finishing second to Not This Time in the Grade 3 Iroquois at Churchill Downs and to unanimous champion 2-year-old male Classic Empire in the Grade 1 Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland. In his final start as a 2-year old, Lookin At Lee finished fourth in the Grade 1 Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita Park.

Lookin At Lee earned his way onto the Triple Crown trail in 2017 off that productive juvenile season and placed in two key preps – the Grade 3 Southwest and Grade 1 Arkansas Derby – to land a spot in the starting gate for the Kentucky Derby. He closed from far back to rally past all but Always Dreaming to finish second in America’s most prestigious race. Lookin At Lee went on to compete in each jewel of the Triple Crown – one of only eight horses to do so in the last five years – and finished fourth in the Preakness Stakes.

Trained by Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen, Lookin At Lee competed against the best of his generation and proved durable, running in 14 graded stakes, compiling a record of 4-6-5 from 35 starts and earning $1,343,188.

“Lookin At Lee was a precocious two-year old with an excellent disposition that brought his connections on a thrilling journey through the Triple Crown races,” Asmussen said. “I’m looking forward to seeing his foals.”

Lookin At Lee’s sire, champion Lookin at Lucky, is one of the best sons of Smart Strike, the sire of Curlin, and bred on the similar Mr. Prospector/Danzig line as Distorted Humor.

Sons of Lookin at Lucky are also beginning their own stallion careers, including Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Accelerate and Kentucky Derby winner Country House.

Lookin At Lee’s dam, the graded-stakes placed Langara Lass, won four of 17 starts and earned more than $190,000. She also produced multiple Grade 3 winner Blended Citizen and the Grade 1-placed Battlefield Angel, dam of 2020 Breeders’ Cup Sprint entrant Manny Wah.
