Filly by Dialed In brings second-highest price at OBS October open yearling sale

By Sarah Mace

A bay New York-bred filly by Dialed In from the family of Upstart fetched the second-highest price overall at Wednesday’s Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2019 October open yearling sale when Patrice Miller, EQB, Inc., agent, made a winning bid of $70,000.

Bred by Jonathan Thorne and foaled on February 1, 2018, Hip 434[1] was already a veteran of the sales ring. As a weanling, the bay was purchased by trainer Linda Rice for $60,000 at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton fall mixed sale. Returning to action at the sales company’s preferred New York-bred yearling sale in Saratoga this summer, she was purchased by Lambholm at a markdown for $22,000, before bringing $70,000 on Wednesday.

The Dialed In filly is the third foal out of Fujiana, a winning New York-bred mare by Fusaichi Pegasus. Her lone foal to start to date, Thirsty Gal by Stay Thirsty, is a multiple winner. Fujiana’s half-sister Josh’s Madelyn (Quiet American) is a Grade 2 winner, who has earned nearly $500,000. Thorne purchased Fujiana for $50,000 at the 2016 Keeneland November breeding stock sale. She currently has a weanling filly by American Freedom and was bred this year to Sharp Azteca.

The filly’s second dam is stakes performer Intend to Win. Her daughter Party Silks produced New York-bred multiple graded stakes winner, millionaire and young sire Upstart. There is abundant black type also under the filly’s stakes-winning third dam Intently.

During the session, 46 New York-bred yearlings successfully changed hands of 58 offered (including three private sales) for a strong buyback percentage of 20.7%, which outperformed the overall 25.7% RNA rate.

The average price for a New York-bred yearling at the session was $12,102 and the median was $8,500. These results were on par with the overall sale indicators, where the average and median were, respectively, $12,671 and $8,000.
