Kantharos colt out of stakes producer heads NY cohort at F-T Midlantic fall yearlings sale

By Sarah Mace

A grey/roan colt by Kantharos out of stakes producer Prominent topped the 41 New York-breds who sold at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Fall yearlings sale on Monday and Tuesday. The top New York-bred colt and filly both sold in Tuesday’s second session which compassed hips 151 through 435. An abbreviated session Monday included the first 150 yearlings in the catalogue.

Patrick Welsh’s Seagull Capital (Tim Hills, agent) went to $130,000 to purchase Hip 278[1], a Kantharos colt from the consignment of Indian Creek, agent. He brought the co-third highest price of the sale. Bred by Fifth Avenue Bloodstock and foaled on May 14, 2018, the youngster is out of Prominent, a Kentucky-bred daughter of El Prado (IRE) and the dam of New York-bred stakes winner She’s All Ready by Girolamo. Living up to her name with a maiden victory at Saratoga for Nirvana Stables and trainer Jim Ryerson, She’s All Ready wheeled right back to win the Seeking the Ante at the Spa in her second start. After picking up a half-dozen additional stakes placings, she retired with over $400,000 in earnings. Prominent has produced two additional winners and was bred this year to Distorted Humor. The colt’s second dam Biblionic is also a stakes winner.

The top New York-bred filly, Hip 320[2] by Lemon Drop Kid, was the co-third top-selling filly of the sale. Purchased by Three Diamonds Farm for $100,000, the February 17 dark bay/brown filly was bred by Hibiscus Stables and consigned by Indian Creek, agent.

The filly’s dam Salt Water Reign is a producer of three winners. The mare’s first foal, Sound Django by Desert Party, earned over $220,000. Another six-figure earner is Mike’s Girl by Scat Daddy. Salt Water Reign foaled a full sister to the sale filly this year and has been bred back to Midnight Lute. The filly’s second dam is Top Ruhl, a stakes winner and multiple graded stakes-placed runner.

In all 41 New York-breds sold of 66 offered, translating into a 37.9% buyback percentage. The New York-bred average was $21,680 and the median was $10,000. Overall, the sale posted a RNA rate of 21.3%. The average and median prices, respectively, were $24,253 (+12% from $21,653 in 2018) and $14,000 (-6.7% from $15,000 in 2018).
