Lady’s Golden Guy, bred by Ronald Breed and trained and owned by Debra Breed, delivered an impressive performance on debut to win an open maiden special weight sprint at Finger Lakes on Tuesday and give his New York-based sire Golden Ticket[2] his first winner.

Drawn in post seven in the robust field of 11 and bet down to 7-5 favoritism under jockey Nazario Alvarado, Lady’s Golden Guy was fractious at the gate – needing to be loaded twice – but thoroughly professional once the real running started.

Traveling three-wide early toward the rear of the second flight, Lady’s Golden Guy had a good view of developments up front, where The Dr’s Slippers took over the lead from Must Be Tough after a first quarter in 22.52. The gelding then advanced into contention confidently at the rail in the far turn and, with eight lengths to make up and three horses to pass, angled out for the drive.

Lady’s Golden Guy tackled his first rivals in upper stretch, then overhauled The Dr’s Slippers by the sixteenth marker before drawing off smartly to win by 2 1/4 lengths in a final time of 1:13.12.

Lady’s Golden Guy is one of two winners from two foals to start out of Valuable Lady, a New York-bred winner by Value Plus who was bred by Sequel Thoroughbreds. Purchased by Winning Move Stable at the 2009 OBS select sale of 2-year-olds, the mare was eventually claimed by the Breeds in January 2012. She earned $158,740 from 40 starts before retiring to broodmare duty. Valuable Lady has yearling a full sister to Lady’s Golden Guy named One Ticked Lady and a weanling filly by Bellamy Road. She has been bred back to Bellamy Road.

Golden Ticket[3] stands at Questroyal North[4] in Stillwater, where his 2019 stud fee was $6,000. By Speightstown out of the Deputy Minister mare Business Plan, the stallion won stakes at three, four and five, including his crowning achievement, the historic dead heat with Alpha in Grade 1 Travers in 2012 for trainer Ken McPeek.

In all, Golden Ticket placed in eight more graded staked, competed at 13 different tracks over five seasons and earned $1,362,924. Among his noteworthy performances are runner-up finishes in the 2013 Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile at Santa Anita and the Grade 1 Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs. Golden Ticket was also second by three-quarters of a length in the Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby and second by a head to Palace Malice in the Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Handicap. Golden Ticket has 30 foals of racing age.
