Monday evening’s opening session of the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga selected yearlings sale saw five New York-breds change hands, three of whom, including Hip 99 – the New York-bred top-seller and co-tenth top-priced yearling in the session at $550,000 – are products of two of the most successful families in Chester and Mary Broman’s breeding program. All three Broman-breds were consigned by Sequel New York. The second highest-priced youngster is a half-brother to multiple Grade 1 winner Diversify who brought $275,000. The average price for the five New York-breds was $273,000.

The Broman-bred topper, Hip 99[2], is a dark bay/brown colt by Quality Road foaled on March 12, 2018 and purchased by China Horse Club/ Maverick Racing. The $550,000 Quality Road colt issues from the third-generation of an extremely productive family, which includes Grade 1 Florida Derby winner Friends Lake. Chestertown farm bought the sale colt’s third dam, Antespend, an eventual multiple Grade 1 winner and $1 million earner, for $900,000 at the 1997 Keeneland 2-year-old sale. She went on to produce Friends Lake and Grade 2 winner Seeking the Ante, the sale colt’s second dam.

Seeking the Ante, in turn, produced 4-time stakes winner Mineralogist and Hip 99’s dam Risk a Chance (A.P. Indy) who is stakes placed and has already produced winner Risky Analysis. The mare produced a colt by Laoban this year and has been bred to Ghostzapper.

Tracy Farmer went to $240,000 to get another Broman-bred foal with Seeking the Ante as the second dam. Hip 62[3], a chestnut filly by Hard Spun, is out of Seeking the Ante’s first stakes-winning foal Mineralogist (Mineshaft). Mineralogist has already produced Evan Shipman winner Can You Diggit, who has earned over $400,000. Her other foal to start is a winner. Barren last year, Mineralogist has been bred to Tiznow.

The third Broman-bred yearling of the night brought $100,000 from Richard Greeley. Hip 105[4], a dark bay or brown filly by Pioneerof the Nile, is out of Rumors of Glory (Storm Cat), a half-sister to Broman-bred multiple Grade 1 winner Artemis Agrotera. The second dam is Broman homebred Indy Glory (A.P. Indy), a full sister to Grade 1 winner, millionaire and sire Stephen Got Even and to stakes winner Grand Merger. The Bromans purchased the filly’s third dam Immerse (Cox’s Ridge) at the 1997 Keeneland November sale for $350,000.

Two more New York-bred yearlings sold for $200,000 and up in Session 1, led by a More than Ready half-brother to multiple Grade 1 winner and 2018 New York-bred Horse of the Year Diversify (Bellamy Road), Hip 104[5]. Solis/Litt are the youngster’s new owners.

Bred, like Diversify, by Fred W. Hertrich III & John D. Fielding, the colt is out of Rule One, a placed daughter of Street Cry (IRE), whom Hertrich bought at the 2010 Keeneland November sale for $57,000. Diversify who was trained by the late Rick Violette, Jr., won the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup and, one year ago, the Grade 1 Whitney. He retired this year at six with 10 wins in 16 starts and earnings of just under $2 million. The More than Ready colt was consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency Agent LXXXI.

Last but not least, Hartley-DeRenzo bought Hip 69[6] for $200,000. The bay yearling filly by white-hot sire Into Mischief was bred by Joe Fafone and consigned by Select Sales. The filly’s dam Miss Vigilance is a Kentucky-bred daughter of War Pass who has produced two winners from her first two foals. There is abundant black type under the second dam Star of Wicklow, who is the dam of Grade 1 winner Man From Wicklow and multiple graded stakes winner Wild Heart Dancing. The mare produced a filly this year by Distorted Humor and has been bred to Speightstown.

Tuesday’s second and concluding session of the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga select yearling sale will feature Hips 113-223 and begin at 6:30 p.m.
