Laoban yearling tops NY-breds at OBS winter mixed; NY cohort outperforms sale overall

[1]By Sarah Mace

A short yearling from the first crop of New York-based stallion Laoban[2] (Uncle Mo) emerged as the top New York-bred seller at the two-session Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company winter mixed sale this week. The dark brown/bay youngster was hammered down to T & R Holdings in the auction’s second, open session on Wednesday for $47,000. New York-breds fared well at the OBS winter mixed sale overall, out-performing the overall auction average, median and buyback rate.

Bred by Woodford Thoroughbreds and foaled on January 27, 2018, the dark bay/brown Laoban colt (Hip 675[3]) is out of winner-producer D Prairie Cat, a winning Florida-bred daughter of D’wildcat. Woodford purchased the mare, who has since been resold to Saudi Arabia, for $45,000 at the 2013 Keeneland January sale. D Prairie Cat, whose dam French Opera is a full sister to a group 3 winner in Brazil, is a half-sister to Emma’s Encore. a multiple graded stakes winner whose signature victory came in the 2012 Grade 1 Prioress at Saratoga.  Beth Bayer, Agent X, consigned the colt at OBS.

Winner of the Grade 2 Jim Dandy Stakes, the topper’s sire Laoban stands at Sequel Stallions New York[4] in Hudson for Southern Equine Stables, Sequel Thoroughbreds, McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds and Woodford Thoroughbreds.

A pair of fillies shared the boasting rights for top-selling female New York-bred yearling, each bringing $45,000.

Hip 2[5] kicked off the New York-bred action in Tuesday’s preferred session. The dark bay/brown April 2 Speightster filly went to Bluewater Sales LLC, Agent, from the Select Sales consignment. Bred by Stonegate Stables LLC, the filly is out of Ferritto, a New York-bred winner by Suave whose first foal and only starter is a winner. Ferritto is a half-sister to a pair of New York-bred multiple stakes winners, Lady On the Run, who retired with $385,600 in earnings, and Mr. Windjammer, who earned $280,675. Ferritto was bred last year to Shackleford.

Also hammered down for $45,000 was Hip 111[6], a May 2, 2018 filly by Maclean’s Music bred by Maurice F. Casey III. Briston Bloodstock signed the ticket. This filly is out of Surf City Suzie, who has produced a pair of winners and only cost Casey $1,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2009 December mixed sale. The filly’s second dam is a full sister to Grade 2 winner Boone’s Mill. Also appearing under the second dam is La Rocca, a multiple stakes winner and graded performer. Surf City Suzie is in foal to New York sire Golden Ticket.

Overall the sale average was $11,273 (down from $14,596 in 2018), the median price came in at $6,000 (unchanged from a year ago) and buyback percentage was 18.6% (down from 24.9% in 2018).

The New York-bred contingent managed to put up better numbers across-the-board: 31 horses sold of 37 offered (including four private sales) for a 16.2% RNA rate. The average price was $14,400 and the median came in at $8,250.

Mr. Buff cruises to comfortable front-running victory in Jazil Stakes

[1]

NYRA/Chelsea Durand

By Sarah Mace

First to strike the lead and first to cross the finish line, Mr. Buff dominated the field of Aqueduct’s featured $100,000 Jazil Stakes for 4-year-olds and up at 1 1/8-miles Saturday.

This was a second straight stakes win – and fourth consecutive victory – for Chester and Mary Broman’s 5-year-old gelding, who is a third-generation homebred through the male line. Mr. Buff is sired by the couple’s homebred multiple stakes winner Friend or Foe, who stands stud at Smallwood Farm in Virginia. His sire, in turn, is Grade 1 Florida Derby winning Broman homebred Friends Lake.

Reunited with jockey Junior Alvarado, who was aboard Mr. Buff for a pair of races last March and April, and bet down to the 7-2, second choice in the wagering behind 1-2 Sunny Ridge, the speedy Mr. Buff surprised no one when he hit the ground running. By the time the field of six rounded the clubhouse turn, the chestnut had established a 1 1/2-length lead.

Ticking off temperate early splits of 25.05 and 49.90, Mr. Buff preserved a comfortable one-length advantage over Thebigfundamental who tracked in second in the two-path and Sunny Ridge who tracked another half-length back three-wide along the backstretch.

In the far turn Mr. Buff’s pursuers geared up to deliver a challenge and closed ranks, while Sunny Ridge advanced into second. Just past the quarter pole, however, Mr. Buff sealed the deal.

[2]

NYRA/Joe Labozzetta

Kicking clear and widening his lead to an insurmountable margin, Mr. Buff crossed the wire geared down a 5 1/4-length winner in a final time of 1:50.71. Sunny Ridge in second, finished 1/2-length in advance of Thebigfundamental who stayed on for third. Next in order, another neck and head back, respectively, were Hero’s Welcome and Title Ready, while Holiday Bonus brought up the rear. [VIDEO REPLAY[3]]

Alvarado recounted an easy ride for him and picture-perfect performance by his mount.

“That’s his running style, to get to the lead, Alvarado said. “Thankfully, we got there without much trouble and he wasn’t pressured. I just had to put him on the lead, and he knows what to do from there. He took me all the way around. I was just a passenger today. When I asked him for a run in the stretch, he was there for me and he gave me a great kick today. I was just a passenger, to be honest.”

A winner of eight races from 26 career starts with six seconds and three thirds for trainer John Kimmel, Mr. Buff pushed his earnings over the half-million dollar threshold with the Jazil score ($540,786).

Mr. Buff’s dam is Speightful Affair (Speightstown), a graded stakes placed Ontario-bred who was purchased by Chester and Mary Broman for $80,000 at the Fasig-Tipton 2013 winter mixed sale. Her first foal, Organic Gemini who was bred in New York by Turtle Bird Stable (FO 2012), is a stakes placed runner and all three foals to start are winners. In 2018 Speightful Affair produced a full sister to Mr. Buff and has been bred back to Friend or Foe.

Questroyal North moves Stallion Open House to February 9

[1]By Sarah Mace

Weather conditions have once again compelled Questroyal North to reschedule its annual Stallion Open House, the farm announced Thursday in a press release. Originally planned for Saturday, January 19,  but moved to January 27 due to last weekend’s major winter storm, the farm is taking an extra step to ensure the safety of its horses and guests. We are tentatively rescheduling to Saturday, February 9th from 10am-3pm, and will confirm that date as soon as possible.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience, but the welfare and safety of our horses and guests is our primary concern. As always, our stallions are available for viewing 7 days a week by appointment.

Fund Purse Enrichment fuels dramatic purse hikes at Finger Lakes in 2019

[1]By Sarah Mace

In an agreement reached this month between the New York Thoroughbred Breeding and Development Fund (“the Fund”) and Finger Lakes Gaming and Racetrack (FLGR), purse enrichment money from the Fund in the amount of $600,000 will finance 40-50% purse increases for maiden special weight races and the first two levels of allowance races at the Farmington, New York racetrack.

Infusion of Fund Purse Enrichment money into the Finger Lakes purse structure will increase the value of maiden special weight races by close to 49% at FLGR in 2019, worth up to $31,270 which includes up to $4,770 of open company owners’ awards from the Fund’s incentive program. In 2018, New York-breds won 90% of FLGR maiden special weight races. Of these, 68% were won by New York-sired progeny.

New first-level allowance races will now be worth up to $30,680 which includes up to $4,680 of open company owners’ awards from the Fund’s incentive program. The races are carded for 3-year-olds and up who have never won $12,000 other than maiden, claiming, starter or state-bred allowance, OR who have never won two races lifetime.

New second-level allowance races for 3-year-olds and up who have never won two races other than maiden, claiming, starter or state-bred allowance, OR who have never won three races lifetime will be worth up to $31,860 which includes up to $4,860 of open company owners’ awards from the Fund’s incentive program.

NYTB Executive Director Jeffrey Cannizzo said, “By enhancing multiple conditioned races, we hope to provide a strong incentive for horses to come to Finger Lakes and stay stabled on the grounds for subsequent conditions of value.  Also, breeders, owners and stallion owners will get the additional benefit of an opportunity to earn increased incentive awards from the Fund commensurate with the increased purses.”

FLGR President and General Manager Chris Riegle added, “The purse hikes will allow us to better attract new allowance horses that will improve the competitive nature of the Finger Lakes racing product by increasing field size, racing quality and ultimately will result in increased pari-mutuel handle. And we have a number of unallocated stalls that are available for new stables who wish to apply for the Spring meet.”

John Poklemba, Chairman of the Fund, praised participants in the negotiation for the time and effort they put into the project: “I sincerely hope that the parties which negotiated this agreement will see more entries and higher quality racing that will appeal to gamblers and racing fans alike.”

As important as it was to add these new conditions, it was equally important for Finger Lakes to continue to offer the second and third-level allowance races for New York-breds in a regular cycle familiar to Finger Lakes trainers. It is worth noting that, historically, New York-breds win virtually all allowance conditions at Finger Lakes. In 2018 New York-breds won 97% of all allowance races at Finger Lakes. Of these, New York-sired progeny won 54%.

Cannizzo concluded, “This year will see the largest purses at Finger Lakes on record for maiden specials and the first two levels of allowance races. Breeders, owners and stallion businesses will now see 40-50% increases in the awards they earn on these races.  It’s a win-win for everyone. Horsemen with stock that belong at this level across the northeast region should truly give Finger Lakes a close look when this enhanced purse structure appears in the spring condition book next week.”

Camelot Kitten, millionaire son of Kitten’s Joy, retires to stand at Questroyal North

[1]

Coglianese Photos

(Edited press release)

Barry Ostrager has announced that multiple graded stakes-winning millionaire Camelot Kitten[2] will join the 2019 stallion roster at his Questroyal North[3] in Stillwater, where he will become the first son of perennial leading sire Kitten’s Joy to stand in the Empire State.

The 6-year-old Camelot Kitten is owned by his breeders Kenneth L. and Sarah K. Ramsey and will stand as their property for $5,000, live foal. The Ramseys have been in the top 10 on the North American leading owners’ list every year since 2009, and topped the list three times.

Camelot Kitten won six races, five of them stakes, and finished second three times, including two graded stakes, while earning $1,068,977. He broke his maiden at Belmont Park in his 2-year-old debut, and his first stakes victory came at age three in the Grade 2 American Turf Stakes at Churchill Downs. Four weeks later, he captured the Grade 3 Pennine Ridge Stakes at Belmont, followed by a score in the Grade 2 National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame Stakes at Saratoga. He then won the Grade 3  Hill Prince Stakes at Belmont, capping a sophomore season in which his exceptional stretch prowess accounted for four graded stakes.

Camelot Kitten has four full brothers, all winners, out of the Forestry mare Celestial Woods, including multiple graded stakes-winner Bobby’s Kitten. Now eight, he won the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint and was third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf, earning $1,389,417. He stands in England for 12,500 euros and his first foals are yearlings of 2019. He is a shuttle stallion and is the first son of Kitten’s Joy to stand in Australia.

Three other sons of Kitten’s Joy will be standing for the first time in 2019. Roaring Lion has joined the stallion ranks for Qatar Racing at Tweenhills Stud. He’s a four-time Group I winner with earnings of $3.57 million. Oscar Performance, a 7-time graded stakes-winner who earned $2.34 million, will stand at Mill Ridge Farm in Lexington for $20,000, and Hawkbill, Champion 3-year-old in England and 6-time Group winner, will stand at Dalham Stud in Newmarket for 7,500 euros.

Kitten’s Joy was the leading sire in North America in 2018, the second time he has reached the top spot in the last six years. He was in the top five in the other four seasons, finishing third in 2014 and 2015, fifth in 2016, and third in 2017.

In the season that just concluded, Kitten’s Joy set a personal record of more than $18.6 million in progeny earnings. He has reached nearly $97 million in career earnings, has been the No. 1 turf sire for the last six years, and is the No. 1 sire by average number of stakes-winners per year (19) for five. His runners have won nearly 2,100 races and averaged more than $100,000 per starter. He wound up 2018 in second place on the general sire list with 177 winners, just three behind the leader, and was No. 1 with 80 repeat winners. He’s just nine away from 100 black-type winners and has 174 registered 2-year-olds. Kitten’s Joy stands in Kentucky for $75,000 live foal.

(Edited press release)

Sequel Stallions has announced that first foal for multiple stakes winner and graded stakes-placed runner Union Jackson is a colt. Bred by the Mr. Amore Stables of Ron Lombardi, Union Jackson’s first foal, a flashy bay out of the Rockport Harbor mare Hoboken Honey, was born at Sequel New York on January 13.

Mr. Amore Stables, a multiple graded stakes-winning earner of more than $10 million, has enjoyed much success lately having campaigned, among others, Grade 1 Champagne winner Firenze Fire as well as Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint runner-up Tightend Touchdown.

Hoboken Honey is out of a half-sister to Daiwa Bandit, a multiple stakes winner in Japan of over $1.4 million. She is from the immediate family of Grade 3 stakes winners Advancing Star ($794,470, stakes producer) and Darby Fair ($337,374, sire).

A son of two-time Horse Of The Year and champion sire Curlin, out of Grade 1 stakes winner Hot Dixie Chick, half-sister to Grade 1 Kentucky Derby Winner Always Dreaming, Union Jackson was bred in Kentucky by Barbara Banke’s Grace Thoroughbred Holdings, campaigned by her Stonestreet Stables, and trained by Steve Asmussen.

Union Jackson broke his maiden by 7 3/4 lengths going six furlongs at Keeneland becoming a “TDN Rising Star.” He went on to win an 8 1/4-length score in the Sam Houston Sprint Cup Stakes and a victory in the Iowa Sprint Handicap, which he took while running six furlongs in 1:08.75. On the board in 9 of 11 starts, he won 6 races by over a combined 27 lengths with earnings of $273,000.

Union Jackson represents the first participation in the New York breeding program for Stonestreet Stables. Stonestreet owner Barbara Banke stated the she was “very excited to be standing Union Jackson in New York,” adding that “Stonestreet very much believes in Union Jackson, and we will be strongly supporting him at stud.”

“We are so excited about this first crop of Union Jackson and couldn’t be happier that the first one belongs to our friends at Mr. Amore Stable!” Sequel Stallion’s principal Becky Thomas said. “Ron Lombardi visited us yesterday at our annual Stallion Show, but the mare must not have wanted an audience as she waited until we had gone to have her foal. Ron is a big supporter of the New York breeding program so we are particularly thrilled that he has such a nice Union Jackson colt.”

The mare, Hoboken Honey, is breeding back to Union Jackson in 2019.
