Laoban yearling tops NY-breds at OBS winter mixed; NY cohort outperforms sale overall

A short yearling from the first crop of New York-based stallion Laoban[2] (Uncle Mo) emerged as the top New York-bred seller at the two-session Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company winter mixed sale this week. The dark brown/bay youngster was hammered down to T & R Holdings in the auction’s second, open session on Wednesday for $47,000. New York-breds fared well at the OBS winter mixed sale overall, out-performing the overall auction average, median and buyback rate.

Bred by Woodford Thoroughbreds and foaled on January 27, 2018, the dark bay/brown Laoban colt (Hip 675[3]) is out of winner-producer D Prairie Cat, a winning Florida-bred daughter of D’wildcat. Woodford purchased the mare, who has since been resold to Saudi Arabia, for $45,000 at the 2013 Keeneland January sale. D Prairie Cat, whose dam French Opera is a full sister to a group 3 winner in Brazil, is a half-sister to Emma’s Encore. a multiple graded stakes winner whose signature victory came in the 2012 Grade 1 Prioress at Saratoga.  Beth Bayer, Agent X, consigned the colt at OBS.

Winner of the Grade 2 Jim Dandy Stakes, the topper’s sire Laoban stands at Sequel Stallions New York[4] in Hudson for Southern Equine Stables, Sequel Thoroughbreds, McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds and Woodford Thoroughbreds.

A pair of fillies shared the boasting rights for top-selling female New York-bred yearling, each bringing $45,000.

Hip 2[5] kicked off the New York-bred action in Tuesday’s preferred session. The dark bay/brown April 2 Speightster filly went to Bluewater Sales LLC, Agent, from the Select Sales consignment. Bred by Stonegate Stables LLC, the filly is out of Ferritto, a New York-bred winner by Suave whose first foal and only starter is a winner. Ferritto is a half-sister to a pair of New York-bred multiple stakes winners, Lady On the Run, who retired with $385,600 in earnings, and Mr. Windjammer, who earned $280,675. Ferritto was bred last year to Shackleford.

Also hammered down for $45,000 was Hip 111[6], a May 2, 2018 filly by Maclean’s Music bred by Maurice F. Casey III. Briston Bloodstock signed the ticket. This filly is out of Surf City Suzie, who has produced a pair of winners and only cost Casey $1,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2009 December mixed sale. The filly’s second dam is a full sister to Grade 2 winner Boone’s Mill. Also appearing under the second dam is La Rocca, a multiple stakes winner and graded performer. Surf City Suzie is in foal to New York sire Golden Ticket.

Overall the sale average was $11,273 (down from $14,596 in 2018), the median price came in at $6,000 (unchanged from a year ago) and buyback percentage was 18.6% (down from 24.9% in 2018).

The New York-bred contingent managed to put up better numbers across-the-board: 31 horses sold of 37 offered (including four private sales) for a 16.2% RNA rate. The average price was $14,400 and the median came in at $8,250.
