Sequel New York announced Monday, December 3, 2018 that The Lieutenant[2], a half-brother to undefeated Triple Crown hero Justify and a graded stakes winner in his own right is joining the Sequel New York[3] stallion roster

Sired by champion 2-year-old and Grade 1 Kentucky Derby-winning Darley Stallion Street Sense, The Lieutenant is out of the stakes placed Ghostzapper mare, Stage Magic, dam of presumptive horse of the year Justify.

Trained in California by Mike McCarthy for Mr. and Mrs. William K. Warren, Jr., The Lieutenant won races at Del Mar, Los Alamitos, Santa Anita and Golden Gate Fields, where he captured the Grade 3 All American Stakes defeating six graded performers.

In New York, The Lieutenant finished second to multiple Grade 1 winner Diversify in Belmont’s $700,000 Grade 2 Suburban Stakes besting Hoppertunity, Tapwrit, Discreet Lover, War Story and others. He also placed in Santa Anita’s $200,000 Grade 2 Californian Stakes. The bay colt retires with $345,882 in earnings from four wins, two seconds a third.

“Before Justify became a Triple Crown Champion, I thought his older brother, The Lieutenant, could have been any kind,” said trainer Mike McCarthy. “His looks, mechanics and desire to train reminded me of some of the most talented horses I had ever been around, before an unfortunate injury after the Suburban Handicap ultimately curtailed his career.

“I’ll miss watching him train in lock step with City of Light and was sure he was geared up to make some noise in the fall schedule’s biggest races. I have no doubt that his looks, heart and strong female family will be a bonus to the New York Breeders for years to come. Get your mare on the books now… I know mine is!”

Sequel owner Becky Thomas said, “Justify is a very special horse. When the opportunity presented itself to stand his brother in New York, I just couldn’t pass it up. Standing brothers of famous horses has served me very well. Giant’s Causeway’s brother Freud has become the very cornerstone of the breeding program in New York.”

Continued Thomas, “Not only is The Lieutenant a half-brother to the future Horse Of The Year, he beat a bunch of nice Grade 1 winning horses on his own. He is by a horse I love, Street Sense, who is having a phenomenal year and I believe has a very bright future.  I am very happy to be able to offer this quality of bloodlines to our breeders.”

The Lieutenant will stand for $6500 LFSN.

Old Friends, the Thoroughbred Retirement facility in Georgetown, KY., today announced the arrival of New York-bred multiple stakes winner and multiple graded stakes-placed runner Kharafa.

He completes the triumvirate of New York-bred turf stars at the farm, joining Lubash and King Kreesa, whose storied rivalry thrilled their fans in New York and beyond over the years.

Trained by Timothy Hill for owners Paul Braverman and Timothy Pinch, New York-bred warrior Kharafa finished out his career after 52 starts in eight seasons.  A star of the NYRA circuit, Kharafa captured multiple runnings of the Ashley T. Cole Stakes and the Kingston Stakes at Belmont Park as well as Aqueduct’s Three Coins Up Stakes.

This August the 9-year-old was the unexpected star of Saratoga’s New York Showcase Day after capturing the $150,000 West Point Stakes to the delight of his fans.  The win brought Kharafa’s career earnings to $1,238, 622.

Since 2013, Kharafa had become a huge fan favorite thanks to a sensational rivalry with fellow state-bred turfers Lubash and King Kreesa. As fate would have it, all three are now retired at Old Friends in Georgetown.

“It’s a banner day here,” said Old Friends founder Michael Blowen. “[I]t’s such a thrill to reunite Kharafa with his famous rivals. We hope all their fans will come to visit them,”
