Top NY-bred weanlings, mares bring robust price tags in Keeneland November Book 2

Book 2 of Keeneland’s November Breeding Stock sale generated excellent results for both New York-bred weanlings and in-foal mares.

The top weanling to change hands in Book 2 was Hip 787[2], a bay colt by Quality Road from the family of Bodemeister. The bay youngster was purchased by Chestnut Valley Farm for $310,000 in Session 3 from the Eton Sales consignment.

Bred by Albert Fried Jr. and foaled on March 26, 2018, the colt is out of Front and Center, a placed runner by Dynaformer who was purchased by Fried at the same sale last year for $75,000. Out of multiple graded stakes winner Parade Queen, Front and Center is a half-sister to two stakes winners, led by Untouched Talent, a graded stakes winner and the dam of millionaire and successful sire Bodemeister. Front and Center was bred this year to War Dancer.

The top New York-bred weanling filly in Keenland’s second book sold Wednesday as Hip 836[3] to Mike McMahon and Jamie Hill’s McMahon & Hill Bloodstock, Agent for $240,000. Bred by Dr. Jerry Bilinski, the grey/roan February 12 filly is a daughter of Frosted out of Jeanne’s Honor, a placed runner by Honour and Glory. Purchased by Bilinski’s Waldorf Farm at last year’s Keeneland November sale for $75,000, Jeanne’s Honor has produced eight winners, including stakes winner Going to Kukaro by Speightstown and stakes performer Ten K Cat. The filly’s second dam Jeanne Jones, a Grade 1 stakes winner in her own right, is the dam of stakes winner Roman Treasure and the dam of graded winner Belle of Perintown.

“She is a New York-bred and by a first crop sire that is a hot Darley horse, which is nice to resell,” McMahon said. “I really wanted to buy a Frosted for our group and Jamie [Hill] did, too. She is the nicest one we have come across so far.” He continued, “I thought that was a great price for her. I didn’t think that was too much at all. I thought she was really, really good. I think she will look good selling in New York next summer. I think she was well bought.”

A pair of broodmares brought winning bids in the high $300,000s in Book 2. Photographer, who was offered as Hip 934[4] from the consignment of Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales Agency, sold in foal to Pioneerof the Nile on a February 23 cover to Dixiana Farm for $380,000. A winner by War Front with a deep pedigree, Photographer was bred by Gallagher’s Stud and is out of Hostess, a multiple graded stakes winner by Chester House who earned $383,918 and set a course record for 1 3/8 miles over the Saratoga inner turf in the Grade 3 Glens Falls Handicap. Hostess is a half-sister to the dam of Grade 1 stakes winner and millionaire Cupid, multiple graded stakes winner Heart Ashley, graded winner Ashley’s Kitty and stakes winner Indianapolis.

Stakes winner and stakes producer I Bet Toni Knows (Hip 824[5]) sold to WinStar Farm LLC in foal to Dialed In for $375,000. Bred by Sunriver Partners and foaled at Empire Stud in Hudson, I Bet Toni Knows is by Sunriver, a Grade 1-winning full brother to champion Ashado, who stood two seasons at Empire Stud in New York prior to his premature death in 2009. Her lone foal to start to date is graded stakes winner Toinette by Scat Daddy.

I Bet Toni Knows is out of Ibetyouwishyouknew, a Florida-bred daughter of Mr. Greeley, who started once at two and produced five winners from five foals to start including another stakes winner Possessed by Posse. The mare’s second dam is a stakes winner in Canada.

Cumulatively through Book 2, New York-breds have sold for an average price of $184,483. The overall sale average now stands at $218,166. The New York-bred $150,000 median matches the overall sale median.
