The yearling sales season began on a positive note for the New York-bred breeding program Tuesday when the female and male New York-bred toppers brought $250,000 and $220,000 respectively at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton July sale.

Results from the auction were strong overall, with across-the-board gains, but as added testimony to the strength of the New York sales marketplace, the five New York-breds in the sale outperformed the general population in both average and median prices.

The top-selling Empire State-bred was a bay filly by Palace Malice bred by Bill and Jane Moriarty’s Apache Farm in Mount Morris, where she was foaled on March 27, 2017 (Hip 9[3]). Agent Steve Young signed the $250,000 ticket.

Consigned by Perrone Sales Ltd. on behalf of Apache, the filly is out of Passe, an unraced Kentucky-bred daughter of Dixie Union. Passe’s lone foal to race is New York-bred multiple stakes Wonder Gal, who retired in 2017 with four wins, two seconds, six thirds and $904,800 in earnings.

The sale filly’s second dam is stakes winner and graded stakes performer Gal On the Go (Irgun), producer of graded stakes winner Social Queen (Dynaformer), the dam of Force the Pass, winner of the 2015 Grade 1 Belmont Derby. Passe has a Kentucky-bred juvenile colt by Tiznow, now named Freefall, who sold at this same sale last year for 260,000 and has not yet started.

The New York-bred male topper, Hip 289[4], a bay Into Mischief colt, was hammered down to Dime Box Stable for $220,000. Into Mischief was the top-grossing sire at the sale, with five yearlings selling for a total of $1,110,000 and average price of $222,000.

Bred by Woodford Thoroughbreds and foaled at Sequel Stallions New York[5] in Hudson, the Into Mischief colt is out of the young stakes-placed Bernardini mare Kimono, who was purchased by Woodford for $173,412 at the 2014 Tattersalls December mare sale.

Kimono’s 2-year-old filly Just a Whim by Warrior’s Reward is in training at Fair Hill for Mark Shuman and has not yet started. The mare foaled a Laoban filly on January 28, 2018.

All five New York-breds to go through the sales ring at Fasig-Tipton Tuesday found new homes (including one private sale). The quintet sold for an average price of $122,823 and a $101,000 median which outperformed the overall results of the sale where the average came in at $100,829 (up 7.7%) and the median was $75,000 (up 7.1%).
