New York-bred yearlings made a strong showing at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky fall yearling sale, which took place Monday through Wednesday at Fasig-Tipton’s Newtown Paddocks in Lexington. Cumulatively, the New York-bred average was virtually on par with the overall sale average, while the New York-bred median slightly outperformed the sale’s overall median price.

The Empire state-bred toppers for both sexes emerged in the sale’s concluding session: a pair of standout colts, who each brought $200,000, and the top New York-bred filly, who hammered for $170,000.

Repole Stable/ JJ Crupi bought the first of the male co-toppers early in session three (Hip 862[2]). The colt is a dark bay individual by Curlin who was bred by RF HF Mares Rule #3 and foaled at Hidden Lake Farm in Otisville on March 25, 2015. Unnamed, the colt is first foal out of multiple winner Blue Catillac, a Kentucky-bred daughter of Bluegrass Cat out of stakes winner Sweeping (by End Sweep). Blue Catillac is also a half sister to two stakes performers and to stakes producer Apt to Star. Consignor Baccarri Bloodstock purchased the colt as a weanling for $120,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Fall mixed sale.

The other $200,000 co-topper was Hip 1116[3], a chestnut son of Kitten’s Joy bred by Marlene Brody’s Gallagher’s Stud[4] in Ghent where he was foaled. Consigned by Craig & Holly Bandoroff’s Denali Stud on behalf of the breeder, he was purchased by Barry Berkelhammer, agent.

The colt belongs to the fourth generation of Gallagher’s Stud’s most illustrious family. His dam Fanfire, a placed runner by Elusive Quality, is out of Gallagher-bred Eventail, a multiple stakes winner and graded stakes-placed runner by Lear Fan who produced multiple graded stakes winner Straight Story and stakes winner Strong Souther a (a $1.2-million earner in Japan). Eventail, in turn, is out of Gallagher-bred Felicita, the dam of multiple Grade 1 winner and $2.4 earner Take Charge Lady, who as a broodmare went to produce Will Take Charge and Take Charge Indy.

The top New York-bred filly of the sale, who went to Fox Hill Farm/T Mcgreevy, Agent for $170,000, also comes from a prominent and familiar New York-bred family. Bred by Tony Grey and foaled at Rockridge Stud[5] in Hudson last June 2, Hip 1236[6] is a chestnut (currently named St. Bernie) by Union Rags out of Holy Wish by Lord At War (ARG).

Holy Wish has produced a stable of familiar New York-bred standouts: Wishful Tomcat (multiple stakes winner, graded stakes placed, earnings over $700,000), fan favorite Uncle T Seven (multiple stakes winner, earner of over $500,000) and stakes winner Zetterholm. Holy Wish is also the dam of PA-bred multiple stakes winner Lucky Lewis and a daughter, Wicked Wish, who is a graded stakes producer.

Overall, 58 of the 78 New York-bred yearlings offered at the Kentucky fall sale changed hands. Five in all brought six figures. The New York-bred average of $31,814 was a tick below the sale average of $33,065, while the $15,000 median came in slightly above the $14,500 sale median. The New York-bred buyback percentage of 25.6% was more or less identical to the sale of the whole, which improved this year to 25.1% from last year’s 30.8%.
