Of the New York-breds offered during the first two books of this year’s Keeneland November breeding stock sale, a pair of accomplished race mares in foal to commercial sires emerged with the bragging rights, each hammered down for $410,000. The top New York-bred weanling in the first four sessions of trading was a filly by Tale of the Cat who fetched $175,000.

One Time Only (Hip 141), 5-year old mare by Lemon Drop Kid, was the New York-bred star of Book 1. Bred by Nustar Breeding LLC and foaled at Highcliff Farm in Delanson, One Time Only is out of stakes winner Salty Romance and a half-sister to Agave Kiss, a Grade 3 winning sprinter who was never headed in her first six career starts. A $375,000 purchase by Glen Hill Farm from the 2013 Flying Zee yearling dispersal, One Time Only became a stakes-placed earner of nearly $190,000.

One Time Only was purchased by Matthew Plumb at last year’s Keeneland November sale for $170,000. In foal to Union Rags on an April 7 cover, she sold for more than twice that amount on Monday to Reynolds Bell, agent from the consignment of Castle Park Farm LLC.

Harbor Mist (Hip 629) likewise brought $410,000 in the first session of Book 2 on Wednesday, in this case purchased by WinStar Farm in foal to Speightstown on a May 9 cover. She was consigned by Nursery Place, agent.

A six-year-old stakes winning daughter of Rockport Harbor bred by Saratoga Select Broodmares LLC and foaled at Saratoga Glen Farm in Schuylerville, Harbor Mist is out of Jaramar Miss, a winning half-sister to stakes winners Special Power and So Cozy and the dam of stakes winner and graded stakes placed Jaramar Rain, who has produced two graded stakes performers. Harbor Mist went on to become a stakes winner with multiple stakes placings and earnings of $262,529.

WinStar’s Elliott Walden said, “Harbor Mist is just a nice mare in foal to the right horse, we were real pleased with her. I thought she would bring $300,000-$400,000.” Happy Broadbent of Nursery Place added, “She’s in foal to the right horse, Speightstown. You just can’t go wrong with who she’s in foal to. She’s a beautiful mare.”

The New York-bred weanling topper, Hip 1137, is a filly by Tale of the Cat out of a multiple stakes producer. A bay bred by James Lamonica, Lee Sacks and Soave Stables and foaled on April 5, she is a daughter of Nick’s Honor, an unraced daughter of Jump Start who has produced three good winners from three starters: stakes winners The Lewis Dinner (Posse) and Kelli Got Frosty (Frost Giant) and stakes performer Princess Phoebe. Indian Creek went to $175,000 to secure the filly from the consignment of Indian Creek.

In all, during the first four session of trading which comprised the first two books of the Keeneland sale, 17 New York-breds sold of 20 offered for a 15% buyback rate which much stronger than the buyback for the general population of the sale which stands at 27.74%, up from 25.98% last year. The average price for a New York-bred was $141,588 and median was $125,000. Eleven of those individuals realized six figures. In the sale at large, the average after the first two books is $224,971, up 9.13% from $191,260, while the median is $137,500, a 30.95% rise from 2014.
