New York-breds made a solid showing at Fasig-Tipton’s Midlantic sale of 2-year-olds in training in Timonium, Maryland on Monday and Tuesday, putting up decent figures against the backdrop of sale which posted year-to-year declines after seeing double-digit increases in 2013. Meanwhile, two individuals with strong New York ties were hammered down for over $400,000 as the co-fourth and co-seventh top-sellers, respectively, in the sale overall.
A grey/roan Kentucky-bred colt by freshman sire Desert Party[2] out of the multiple stakes-producing mare Satinet (Olympio) was the co-topper of the second session and co-fourth top-seller overall. Desert Party relocated to Becky Thomas and Dennis Narlinger’s Sequel Stallions New York[3] in 2013 and has already had first winner from his first runner in Europe[4]. The March colt (Hip 455[5]), who was bred by Chris and Kirt Cahill, sold for $425,000 to Chris Brothers of Xavier International Bloodstock for Paul Pompa. Jr. Consignor Eddie Woods acted on behalf of Pete Bradley’s Bradley Thoroughbreds, who purchased the colt last year as a Keeneland September yearling for $180,000. Desert Party stands at Sequel for a 2014 fee of $7,500.
Another standout with close New York ties sold early on in the first session for $400,000: Hip 13[6], a bay New York-foaled colt by Tapit out of a half-sister to both Grade 1 winner Paddy O’Prado and recent Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks winner Untapable (Tapit). The colt was bred by Gallagher’s Stud[7], who purchased his dam Wild Chant in foal at the 2011 Keeneland November sale. Because Wild Chant was not bred back as required[8] when relocating to the state, the colt, though a product of the Empire State, is not technically eligible to be registered New York-bred. In the population of New York-breds proper, a dark bay/brown Flatter filly led the way. Selling to Quest Realty for $255,000 from the consignment of Kirkwood Stables as the 12th highest priced juvenile over the two sessions, the April filly (Hip 270[10]) is the first foal out of the stakes-winning Maryland-bred Jim’s Prospect. The filly was bred by the Estate of James Glenn, the dam’s co-breeder, and foaled at Keane Stud[11] in Amenia. Jim’s Prospect is a half-sister to another stakes winner and the filly’s third dam is a multiple stakes producer. The filly, who worked a quarter in :21 4/5, was purchased by Kirkwood stables as a yearling for a modest $35,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic fall yearling sale last September.
The top-selling New York-sired, New York-bred was a $225,000 March filly by Freud who stands at Sequel Stallions New York[3], where she was foaled. The chestnut filly (Hip 287[12]) sold to Lady Sheila Stable Two from the consignment of All in Line Stables after posting a :10 2/5 breeze. Another lucrative pinhook, she sold previously for $47,000 as a Keeneland September yearling. She was bred by Fairlawn Farm and is out of the placed War Chant mare Lake Champlain, who has produced three winners from three starters, including a stakes performer. The filly’s second dam is graded winner and track record-setter Starry Ice (Ice Age), who is the dam of Grade 1 Carter Handicap winner Forest Danger.
Over the two sessions 76 of the 100 New York-breds offered for sale changed hands (including three private sales) for an average price of $44,730 and a $30,000 median. The average price for the general population of the sale was $59,578 and the median was comparable $31,000. The buyback rate of 24 percent for the sale at large was identical to the New York-bred buy-back rate. In addition to the two $200,000-plus sellers, eight more New York-bred individuals brought $100,000 or more, including two New York-sired juveniles: a colt by Cosmonaut (Saratoga Stud[13]) out of Irgun’s Trial bred by Nelson Clemmens (Hip 262[14]), who sold to Matthew Schera for $120,000, and another filly by Freud out of Avril a Portugal (Hip 48[15]) bred by Kathy Feron, who sold to Gary Young on behalf of Michael Dubb for $110,000 Click here for complete sales results[16].
