Patsy Symons went to $190,000 to purchase a filly by successful New York sire Freud (Sequel Stallions New York) out of a half-sister to $4.1 million-earner Better Talk Now on day three of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. spring sale of 2-year-olds in training. The filly, who was consigned by Hoppel’s Horse and Cattle Co., Agent IV, topped Wednesday’s New York-bred offerings.

Bred by Vivien G. Malloy and foaled at her Edition Farm in Hyde Park, Hip 736 sold as a yearling to E J Thoroughbreds for $65,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic fall yearling sale in Timonium before tripling her value at OBS. Buyer Patsy Symons is best known in New York-bred circles as the owner of successful New York-bred turf runners Gitchee Goomie and Effie Trinket, both trained by Rick Violette.

The dark bay / brown filly, who completed a furlong in :10 1/5 in the under tack show, is out of Talkin Indian, a Kentucky-bred multiple winner by Indian Charlie ($98,225). Out of stakes placed Bendita (Baldski), Talkin Indian is a half-sister to multi-millionaire Better Talk Now, winner of five Grade 1 races, headed by the 2004 Breeders’ Cup Turf. Another sibling, B. A. Way, is a stakes winner of over $300,000.

A $160,000 Keeneland September yearling in 2006, Talkin Indian changed hands via public auction again in 2010, when purchased for the same price by McMahon Bloodstock, agent, at the Keeneland November sale. The mare has two other unraced foals on the ground: a 3-year-old Stormy Atlantic filly, and a yearling filly by Colonel John. She was barren in 2014.

Through the third day of the four-session OBS April sale, New York-bred juveniles continued to put up numbers comparable to the general population of the sale, which is posting significant increases this year over last’s year record-setting renewal. The New York-bred average stands at $67,026, slightly under the sale average of $75,103 (up 22 percent from last year). The New York-bred median of $50,000 has outperformed the general sale median of $47,000 (27 percent higher than last year).

OBS Director of Sales Tod Wojciechowski said, “I was pleasantly surprised that momentum has continued from day one and just keeps building up. It’s just been a strong, solid market.”
