A $335,000 chestnut colt by Henny Hughes topped the New York juvenile offerings in a record-breaking renewal of the OBS March Selected Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training sale which took place on Tuesday in Ocala.
The two-day sale, originally slated for Monday and Tuesday, was consolidated to a one-day session on Tuesday to allow buyers extra time after the under tack shows were delayed a day by inclement weather. The results of the hugely successful sale eclipsed previous records for gross ($37,817,500, surpassing the previous record of $33,380,000 recorded in 2008), average ($190,997, up 22.7% from 2013) and median ($137,500, up 10%).

The New York-bred topper (Hip 162) was purchased by Narvick International, Agent, from the consignment of Eddie Woods, Agent IX, after working a sharp eighth of a mile in :10 flat. A pinhooking success story, the April colt was purchased as a yearling by Pete Bradley’s Bradley Thoroughbreds for $90,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Preferred New York-bred sale in Saratoga last summer. Woods reported before the sale, “He’s a lovely colt. He’s been popular.”
Bred by Empire Equines, LLC and foaled at Vinery New York at Sugar Maple in Poughquag, the colt is out of Giggly, an unraced Kentucky-bred daughter of Distorted Humor whose first registered foal, and only foal to start to date, is placed in Japan. His second dam is graded stakes placed, and fourth dam is 1981 Grade 2 Black Eyed Susan winner Dame Mysterieuse (Bold Forbes).

A dark bay / brown Scat Daddy colt (Hip 250) was the second highest-priced Empire State-bred of the sale, going to Martin Anthony for $285,000 after a :10 1/5 furlong breeze. Consignor Hartley / DeRenzo purchased the colt at last year’s OBS yearling sale for $165,000.
Bred by Ned Williams and foaled at Waldorf Farm in North Chatham, the Scat Daddy colt is out of Maryland-bred graded stakes winner and graded stakes producer Maddalena (Good and Tough), who won the 2005 Grade 3 Old Hat Stakes in her third career start to remain undefeated for Michael B. Tabor and Derrick Smith. Maddalena has produced three winners, including Bern Identity (Bernstein), winner of the 2012 Grade 2 Sanford Stakes for George and Lori Hall ($628,000), and stakes-placed Agresivo (Harlan’s Holiday). The colt’s third dam produced multiple stakes winner Foxy G. The Scat Daddy colt is Maddalena’s first registered New York-bred foal.

Pelican LLC went to $260,000 to acquire a Pulpit colt out of My Magic Moment. Like the New York-bred top-seller, Hip 291 was offered by the sale’s top consignor Eddie Woods (Agent VIII) for Bradley Thoroughbreds, who purchased him for $195,000 at the Keeneland September yearling sale. The colt posted a :10 1/5 eighth of a mile.
Bred by Lawrence Goichman and foaled at Edition Farm in Hyde Park, the Tapit colt is the first foal out of My Magic Moment, a Goichman homebred by Forest Wildcat, who is a stakes winner and graded stakes-placed on turf ($149,813). There is abundant black type under the colt’s fourth dam, including multiple graded stakes winner Contredance and multiple graded stakes winner and sire Eltish. My Magic Moment currently has a yearling filly by Candy Ride and was bred Quality Road last year.

The top-selling New York-bred filly, and fourth highest-priced New York-bred juvenile at the sale was sired by Tiz Wonderful and issues from the family of $4.7 million earner Perfect Drift. The first foal out of Passe, an unraced Kentucky-bred daughter of Dixie Union, and foaled at Keane Stud in Amenia, the dark bay / brown March filly (Hip 316) went to Jeff Treadway from the consignment of Old South Farm LLC, Agent, for $210,000 after a :10 1/5 breeze in the under tack show.
Passe is out of stakes winner and graded stakes performer Gal on the Go (Irgun) and a half-sister to Social Queen, a multiple graded winner by Dynaformer ($344,164). Passe has a yearling colt by Dublin and was bred to Colonel John last year.

A noteworthy New York-bred RNA at OBS this year was Hip 342, a filly by freshman sire Super Saver out of multiple stakes winner Reata’s Quik Punch (Two Punch). The filly, who was bred by Clyde Taylor, foaled at Sequel Stallions New York in Hudson and purchased by Clark O. Brewster for $230,000 at the Fasig-Tipton New York-bred preferred yearling sale last summer, failed to meet her reserve when bid up to $390,000. The filly is the second foal from her dam.
The top-selling New York-bred by a current New York sire, and sixth top New York-bred overall, was a Desert Party colt out of New York-bred multiple winner Salt Water Reign (Salt Lake) purchased by Chika Racing Co., Inc. for $150,000 (Hip 358).

In all, 18 of the 25 New York-bred 2-year-olds offered for sale at OBS changed hands (including two private sales), for an average price of $136,083 and $115,000 median. Videos of all breezes are available on the auction results page for the March sale on the OBS website.
