NY-bred yearling performance up dramatically at Keeneland

by Sarah Mace

Even after the phenomenal success of the expanded Fasig-Tipton New York-bred preferred yearling sale at Saratoga in August, there was plenty of quantity and quality left to go around at the Keeneland September yearling sale, where New York-breds delivered a blockbuster performance.

Conducted over 12 days (September 9-21), the Keeneland sale saw 97 New York-bred yearlings go through the ring, representing a 131% increase over the 42 offerings of last year. A total of 76 individuals sold for $6,162,700, compared to 34 last year who brought $2,255,500, generating a 124% rise in number sold and a whopping 173% rise in total sales. The buy-back rate was 22%, a slight uptick over last year’s 19%.

The remaining statistics speak both to the demand for New York-bred yearlings this year at Keeneland and the quality of the offerings. The average price for a New York-bred yearling at the sale in 2013 was $81,088, up 22% over last year’s average of $66,338. In 2012 the average had already posted a 50% increase over 2011. This year’s Keeneland average even outperformed the average at the 2013 Fasig-Tipton New York preferred yearling sale, where 196 yearlings brought an average price of $72,480. The median this year at Keeneland jumped 39% from $32,500 in 2012 to $45,000 in 2013, but did not reach the level of the $55,000 Saratoga median.

New York-bred yearlings also brought outstanding results at the top of the scale, with 24 individuals bringing six figures, compared to seven in 2012. At the very top end, the number of horses who sold for $200,000 or more tripled over last year from three to nine, topped by a War Front colt bred by Michael and Patricia Palenscar who became the top-selling New York-bred yearling of 2013 when he brought $450,000 during the second session of the sale[1].
