Z R J Stables’ Sol the Freud (Freud), a two-year-old full brother to Grade 1 winner and multiple New York-bred champion Franny Freud, won his career bow at Saratoga on Friday with authority, giving his trainer David Cannizzo his first career training victory at the Spa.

Following five three-furlong works from April through early June, Sol the Freud came into his debut sporting a series of steady four- and five- furlong moves beginning June 10. Wearing blinkers and partnered with John Velazquez for his career bow, the blaze-faced chestnut was 5-1 fourth choice in a field of seven nicely-bred New York-bred juveniles.

Howaboutwe was the first out of the gate from his outside post, but Sol the Freud moved up quickly to the top spot from post five and opened up a length and a half on the competition, ticking off early fractions of 22.84 and 46.14 at the rail.

Never encountering a serious challenge round the far turn and in upper stretch, the colt drew away in the final furlong to secure the victory by a decisive 3 1/4 lengths. Favorite Groupthink (Majestic Warrior), a half to stakes winner La Concerto and stakes-placed Game Token, finished second, and longshot Howaboutwe (Da Stoops) finished third. The winner’s final time for 5 1/2 furlongs over the fast going was 1:04.33.

Winning trainer David Cannizzo said he wasn’t surprised by a stand-out performance from the colt first out. “Becky Thomas [of Sequel Bloodstock] had him ready for the [OBS] sale and he’s been going really really well.” Sol the Freud, under his previous name Frankie Freud, was purchased by Cannizzo for Z R J from the consignment of Thomas’ Sequel Bloodstock for $90,000 at this year’s OBS March sale after a sharp :10.1 work in the under track show.

In the colt’s training Cannizzo has intermixed works on turf and dirt, along with turf gallops. He thinks that Sol the Freud has a promising career as a sprinter in front of him whatever the surface, but may be a little better on turf. In either case, “He’s a sprinter – turf or dirt – that’s his game.”

Sol the Freud was bred by Tony Grey, 2009 New York Breeder of the Year, in partnership with Tass Thoroughbred Partners LLC and foaled at Keane Stud[2] in Amenia. He is the fourth winner out of Frankly Fran, a winning daughter of D’Accord who is a half-sister to two stakes winners.

Frankly Fran’s most successful foal, Franny Freud – also a debut winner – won stakes on Polytrack, dirt and turf, including the Grade 1 Prioress at Belmont, Grade 2 Beaumont at Keeneland, Lady Finger Stakes at Finger Lakes and three divisions of the New York Stallion Stakes Series ($686,029),. After being retired injured just days before starting as the probable favorite in the Grade 1 Test, Franny Freud was purchased for $560,600 at the Fasig-Tipton Fall Mixed sale by Katsumi Yoshida.

Frankly Fran is also the dam of the resilient Semichi (Brushed On), who started 64 times and earned nearly $200,000, and Saratoga Steve, also by Freud ($70,211).

Sol the Freud is Frankly Fran’s first foal since Franny, but she currently has yearling and weanling colts, both sired by Freud (Sequel Stallions[3]), who currently leads New York sires in stakes winners (7) and stakes wins (9).
