Grade 1 Winner Boys At Tosconova to enter stud at Questroyal North

Questroyal Stud, Gus Schoenborn, and Taylor Made Stallions announced on Friday the acquisition of Boys At Tosconova.  The speedy and precocious Grade 1 winner and $688,960 earner will stand the 2013 season at Questroyal North in Stillwater.

Taylor Made Stallions Vice-President Ben Taylor said, “Boys At Tosconova is an outstanding racehorse with exceptional conformation who showed enormous precocity and he hails from a sire line that favors durable speed. We are very excited to partner with Questroyal Stud and Gus Schoenborn to stand this exciting young stallion in New York and we are looking forward to seeing his first crop of foals.”

Boys at Tosconova, a 4-year-old son of Officer campaigned by Samantha Siegel’s Jay Em Ess Stable, won 5 races, including the Grade 1 Hopeful at Saratoga and never finished out of the money in nine starts.

Second in the Grade 3 Kentucky Juvenile Stakes at Churchill Downs in his career debut, Boys At Tosconova broke his maiden next out by 12 lengths at Belmont Park, completing 5 furlongs in :56.26, less than a half-second off the 15 year old track record, and earning a 102 Beyer Speed Figure. In his third start, Boys At Tosconova captured the 7-furlong Grade 1 Three Chimneys Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga, defeating Grade 1 winner Stay Thirsty.

In the final race of his juvenile season, Boys At Tosconova finished second to eventual juvenile Champion Uncle Mo in the Grade 1 Breeder’s Cup Juvenile at Churchill Downs, posting another triple-digit Beyer in one of the fastest renewals of the race in Breeder’s Cup history.

Boys At Tosconova carried his winning form into campaigns at three and four, winning three straight races at Aqueduct and Gulfstream Park, including a victory over recent Grade 1 Breeder’s Cup Filly and Mare Sprint winner Groupie Doll, and closed out his career with a second-place finish behind Grade 1 Woodward Stakes victor To Honor and Serve in the Grade 3 Westchester Stakes at Belmont Park.  On retirement Boys At Tosconova’s record stood at 5-3-1 in nine starts.

Owned in partnership by Questroyal Stud, Taylor Made Stallions and Gus Schoenborn, Boys At Tosconova will be syndicated and stand for $5,000 due when foal stands and nurses. A limited number of shares are available to New York breeders.

Teuflesberg to McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds

(Edited Press Release)

Joe McMahon, owner of McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds, announced today the purchase of Teuflesberg, sire of Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner Trinniberg ($1,483,300). Teuflesberg is one of only three Second Crop Sires in North America to sire a Grade 1 winning 3-year old.

Besides Trinniberg, 8-year-old Teuflesberg has sired stakes winner Wizardry and black type earners Logan’s Peak and Not An Altar Boy from his initial crop of only 34 foals.

Teuflesberg is also the sire of Ostourah, a full sister to Trinniberg, who was an impressive debut juvenile main track winner at Belmont for trainer Chad Brown. She was purchased by Brown for owner Abdullah Saeed Almaddah for $450,000 at this year’s Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-year-old sale.

Teuflesberg, who formerly stood at Journeyman Stud near Ocala, is a son of Johannesburg, who was named Champion 2-year-old in Europe (England, Ireland and France) and North America after winning the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, one of four G1 wins.

Teuflesberg won the 7-furlong Grade 2 Woody Stevens Stakes in 1:21 at Belmont, and is a multiple graded stakes-placed winner of $621,981.

Joe McMahon said of the recent purchase of Teuflesberg, “Looking back it’s no wonder he is a successful sire. At two, he was beaten a hard fought head by leading sire Scat Daddy in the Sanford – Grade 2 at Saratoga, then he beat co-leading sire Hard Spun going a flat mile in the Southwest at Oaklawn . Teuflesberg joins both Scat Daddy and Hard Spun as the only three Second Crop Sires to sire a Grade 1 winner.”

McMahon continued, “We were fortunate to purchase this very desirable young stallion before Trinniberg’s big win in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint. That is great added value!  We’ve been trying to buy a horse like this for thirty years.  He is undoubtedly the very best opportunity we’ve ever been able to offer New York Breeders.”

Plans are for Teuflesberg to be re-syndicated for stud duty in New York.
