The Lake Luzerne Stakes, a seven-furlong contest for three-year-old New York-bred fillies – and the “first feature” on Friday’s Grade 2 National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame card at Saratoga – attracted seven fillies, and (on paper) at least three strong contenders, but Freud’s Notebook was best of them all, handing her New York sire his third Saratoga stakes win in three days with her ¾-length victory.
Owned by Pont Street Stable and trained by Bruce Brown, Freud’s Notebook went into the Lake Luzerne making her sixth start of the year, and with a strong record behind her. Nine times on the board from eleven career starts (all in state-bred company), and only faltering in two route tries on the grass, Freud’s Notebook broke her maiden in January going a mile on the Aqueduct inner dirt course and took care of first level allowance foes next time out going one mile and seventy yards over the same surface. After a second-place finish in her next start, a second-level allowance/optional claimer, she ran a most creditable third behind Franny Freud and So N So in the 6 ½-furlong Park Avenue Division of the Stallion Stakes Series at Belmont in May. Freud’s Notebook entered the Lake Luzerne on the heels of the second of her two poor turf tries (on July 29th at the Spa).
After the break, the speedy Torrone, the most lightly raced filly of the field (making her third lifetime start), broke on top smartly and took the lead, where she was joined briefly by Tapaline to her outside. Freud’s Notebook and jockey Fernando Jara (who had ridden her in the Park Avenue), then tested the waters of a challenge, moving up at the rail from fifth where there was ample room as the vanguard proceeded up the backstretch near the middle of the track. As the gap at the inside narrowed, the pair backed off, settling ultimately on even terms with Tapaline going into the turn. When Tapaline receded, Freud’s Notebook and Jara angled out and rallied. Torrone, having cruised through a quarter in 23.62 and a half in 46.80, was clear at the top of the stretch, but could not, ultimately, stay the distance, leaving Freud’s Notebook to make the lead at the furlong marker. Under steady urging, she inched clear and had enough late kick to avert a threat from the closing Rogue’s Jewel, who finished second by three-quarters of a length. Tapaline, who continued to run evenly, finished third. After three quarters in 1:11.54, the final time for the seven furlongs over a fast track was 1:25.16. Northern Warrior, Torrone, Landlash and Amiga Del Sol completed the order of finish.
Bred by Mr. and Mrs. P. A. Everard and foaled at Rojan Farms in Schuylerville, Freud’s Notebook has now earned $147,848 from twelve starts and compiled a 3-5-2 career record. She is the second foal to start – both New York-bred winners – from the winning Notebook mare Halo’s Notebook, purchased by Elizabeth Everard for $24,000 at the 2004 OBS Fall Mixed sale. Halo’s Notebook has a yearling colt by Mass Media, a filly this year by Wildcat Shoes, and has been bred back to Freud. Freud stands for Sequel Stallions[2] at Keane Stud[3].
