When two-year-old Leadfootxpress came home first in a 5 ½-furlong maiden special weight at Suffolk Downs on Monday, he gave his sire Andromeda’s Hero his first career winner. The gelding, bred by Silvernails Bloodstock LLC and owned by his trainer Ernest L. Smith, completed the race in 1:07.62 under jockey Orlando Bocachica.
Andromeda’s Hero, who stands for Questroyal Stud, LLC at Michael Lischin’s Dutchess Views Farm near Pine Plains, is an eight-year-old son of leading sire Fusaichi Pegasus out of the multiple stakes-producing Storm Bird mare Marozia. He stood his first season at stud in 2007 at Nathan Fox’s Richland Hills near Midway, Kentucky, where he produced a crop of 18 current two-year-olds. The following year, he relocated to New York and bred 75 mares. His stud fee for 2010 was $3,500.
Andromeda’s Hero, campaigned by Robert LaPenta and trained by Nick Zito was known for soundness and an ability to be competitive at the highest levels. A winner at two, at three Andromeda’s Hero ran second to champion Afleet Alex in the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes, third in the Grade 1 Jim Dandy, and won the Grade 3 Fred W. Hooper Handicap. The following year he had third-place finishes in the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup, Grade 1 Donn Handicap, and Grade 1 Suburban Handicap. In 25 career starts over the course of three seasons, the sixteen-hand (plus) chestnut won or placed in eight graded races and earned over $800,000.
