New York stallions Stonesider, Read the Footnotes, Posse and Utopia (Jpn) led the pack of New York-based stallions in the two-day Fasig-Tipton Saratoga New York-bred preferred yearling sale which took place on August 7-8. Stonesider had the top-seller of the state-based sires – the top yearling filly in the sale’s first session on Saturday evening, who was also second highest-priced yearling of that session and seventh-highest seller overall. In that same session, Read the Footnotes had the number two yearling colt and Posse and Utopia had progeny in the top twenty.
Stonesider, an undefeated son of Giant’s Causeway who stands at Highcliff Farm in Delanson and whose first foals are yearlings of 2010, was well-represented in the catalogue with four, but his star was a dark bay/brown filly out of the winning Distinctive Pro mare Katina K (Hip 375). Bred by Carl Bennett and consigned by Blake-Albina Thoroughbred Services as agent, the filly, foaled and raised at Sky Top Farm, was purchased by Brooklyn Boyz Stables for $82,000. Singled out for attention before the sale on the Thoroughbred Times “The Short List”, the filly’s consigner Ron Blake described her as “a big, pretty, well-balanced filly that almost looks like a colt. She has a big walk and a really good presence about herself.” Her dam Katina K has produced three New York-bred winners from three foals to start, the most successful of whom is ten-time winner Dr. Quirk (by Tomorrows Cat), an earner of $159,305. Katina K has a filly this year by Van Nistelrooy and has been bred to Posse. The filly’s second dam is Grade 3- and multiple stakes-winner Darlin Momma (by Night Invader) and third dam, Donna’s Darlin produced two stakes horses.
Read the Footnotes, currently New York’s seventh-ranking sire and standing for Sequel Stallions at Keane Stud, also had a standout in Session 1, Hip 374. The bay colt was the second highest-priced colt in the session, and 14th-highest seller in the sale overall. Buzz Chace, acting as agent, purchased him for $70,000 from consigner Paramount Sales (agent IV). Bred by David Cassidy and foaled at Waldorf Farm in North Chatham, the colt is a half-brother to Jenny’s So Great, a multiple black type-placed multiple winner by Greatness, who has $220,748 in purse earnings. The colt himself gets an A++ TrueNicks rating (based on the cross of Read the Footnotes with Danzig, who sired the sire of his dam Jenny’s Search). Jenny’s Search, a placed daughter of Lost Soldier, has produced a total of three winners from four foals to start. She currently has an unraced New York-bred two-year-old filly by Trajectory and a 2010 colt by Stephen Got Even and has been bred back to Greatness.
Even though current leading New York sire Posse stood in the state for the first time this year for Empire Stud, he did have a top New York-bred yearling in this year’s sale: his only yearling catalogued, a colt bred by Mrs. Gerald A. Nielsen. Property of Mrs. Nielsen’s Sunnyfield Farm with Summerfield (Francis and Barbara Vanlangendonck) acting as agent, Hip 347 was purchased by Thomas J. Gallo III Sales Agency for $42,000. The colt’s winning dam Elise’ (by Distinctive Pro) has already produced four winners from four foals to start, including black type-winning and Grade 3-placed New York-bred Rollers (by Stormy Atlantic) and six-figure earner New York-bred Bubba Sparks (Williamstown). In all, her progeny have earned over $600,000. She has a filly reported this year by Stormy Atlantic. The yearling is rated A by TrueNicks, based on the Posse/Mr. Prospector cross.
The sire represented by most yearlings in the Saratoga sale was Utopia, a multiple Grade 1 stakes winner who raced for the most part in Japan and earned nearly $5 million. Utopia stands at McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds and his first foals are yearlings this year. One of those yearlings, Hip 353, a chestnut colt bred by Judi Nelson and Patricia Calandro and foaled at Barely Able Farm sold for $40,000, going to McMahon Bloodstock, acting as agent for Seidman Stable. He was bred by Judi Nelson and Patricia Calandro and consigned by Patricia Calandro. His dam is the incredibly successful broodmare Final Accord, whose progeny have earned over $1.3 million. A winning D’Accord mare she is a producer of no fewer than three black type winners and four six-figure earners, including Grade 1 winner and earner of over $350,000 Buy the Sport by Devil’s Bag. Eight of Final Accord’s nine foals to start have been winners. A two-year-old (by Ten Most Wanted) has placed in his single start and she has a colt reported by Sunriver this year.
