On the heels of an impressive second-place finish in the $100,000 Grade 3 1 3/8-mile The Very One Stakes at Gulfstream Park on February 27th, Nehantic Kat will seek to improve on her record of 6-3-4 from eighteen starts ($347,981) when she meets ten other older fillies and mares this Sunday in Gulfstream Park’s featured $150,000 1 ½ mile Grade 3 Orchid Stakes. Post time for the race is 5:43 PM EDT.

Nehantic Kat, conditioned by Barclay Tagg and teaming up for the first time with Javier Castellano, will break from post eight. She has worked three times at Gulfstream since her last start, including a five furlong bullet on March 16th (:59 4/5). Her chief rivals, both trained by Bill Mott (who won the race last year with Dress Rehearsal), are high-weight Changing Skies (Sadler’s Wells), last-time-out winner of The Very One with a strong come-from-behind rally, and Mushka (Empire Maker), runner-up in the Breeders’ Cup Ladies Classic, who will be returning to the turf for the first time after a victory in the Grade 3 Glens Falls Handicap at Saratoga. Changing Skies has the outside post under Jorge Chavez and Mushka has drawn post one and will be ridden by Kent Desormeaux.

A seven-year-old daughter of formerly New York-based Tomorrows Cat, Statehouse Stable’s Nehantic Kat was bred by Questroyal Stable Inc. and Ramona Kirker-Head. She is partially owned and managed by Thomas J. Gallo’s Parting Glass Racing[2].
