New York-bred Stand-Outs at OBS March

by Sarah Mace

Six New York-breds sold at the OBS March Selected Sale of Two Year Olds in Training, the top two breezing in the first under tack show and selling on the first day of the sale for $200,000 and $165,000 respectively. The sale, which took place on March 16th-17th, was relatively strong, showing increases over last year’s average (10.6%) and median (16.8%) prices, with both top New York-breds far out-performing the sale average of $107,257.

The top-priced New York-bred was a grey/roan Tapit filly out of Dancelikethedevil (Devil’s Bag) bred by Richard Simon’s Sez Who Thoroughbreds and consigned by Eisaman Equine. The filly breezed a quarter-mile in :22 3/5 and was purchased by J.C. Oxley for $200,000. She had previously sold to Eisaman for $95,000 at the 2009 OBS August Selected Yearling Sale. Richard Simon had purchased her dam Dancelikethedevil at the 1999 Keeneland November Breeding Stock sale for $39,000; she has produced three winners from five foals to start, including two-time restricted black type winner New York-bred Bon Fearless (Mighty Magee) who earned $194,190. The second dam Celeberty Dancer (Northern Dancer) produced Jordy’s Baba, a multiple stakes winner, and five other winners, and third dam Flaming Issue produced eleven winners, including two stakes winners and a stakes producer.

A son of Distorted Humor out of the Affirmed mare Exchange Place consigned by All in Sales (Tony Bowling),  who breezed a furlong in :10 3/5, was purchased by K-Squared (John Parisella, Agent) for $165,000 to become the other top New York-bred to go through the ring at OBS. Bred by Albert Fried, Jr., the bay colt sold privately to David McKathan for $80,000 after the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Selected Yearling sale. The Thoroughbred Times Today “The Short List” characterized the colt as “powerful” and quoted Bowling, often a McKathan partner, as saying “He’s a real nice colt now, who was really immature when we bought him at Saratoga. He’s good minded, well-balanced, and just a nice moving, sound-looking kind of colt.” His winning dam is a full sister to one of Affirmed best sons, multiple Grade 1 winner Affirmed Success ($2,285,315), and half-sister to two stakes performers and a producer of a stakes winner.

Additionally a bay (KY-bred) colt by Congaree, out of a winning graded stakes-placed Montbrook mare who issues from the family of Grade 1 Winner Bellamy Road, sold for $95,000. Congaree relocated to New York for the 2010 breeding season and stands at Highcliff Farm in Delanson.
