A chestnut daughter of multiple Grade 1-winning millionaire and freshman sire Henny Hughes, who sold to Thoroughbred Futures for $275,000, brought the biggest price for a New York-bred at the Fasig-Tipton Calder Selected Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale on March 2nd. Bred by Jerry Bilinski, DVM and Harry Patten, and consigned by Niall Brennan Stables, the filly comes from a strong female family. Her first dam, Open Window, a winner by Trempolino, has produced three winners from three foals to start, including Grade 2-placed Wild Chick (Forest Wildcat). Second dam Vexation (Vice Regent) produced Grade 2- and Grade 3-placed colts among seven winners and her unraced filly V Sign produced three stakes horses and five more winners. The third dam, Chagrin Falls (Polic), who comes from the family of Irish champion Katies, produced ten winners, three stakes-winners among them. The Henny Hughes filly is inbred 5S x 4D x 5D to Northern Dancer and 4D x 5D to Victoria Reigns.
A Breeders’ Cup-nominated Tapit colt named Concealed Weapon out of Cherished Trick (Phone Trick) and bred by Barbara Nelson and Richard Lugovich Jr., sold to E Stable for $250,000 as the second highest priced New York-bred in the Calder sale. The bay colt, consigned by Sequel Bloodstock (Becky Thomas), is a Pulpit/Icecapade cross with A++ TrueNicks Rating. He has six siblings of racing age, all winners, and his winning second dam My Cherie Amour has produced seven winners, including Grade 3-winning Aucilla (Relaunch). Aucilla is dam of Passing Shot (A. P. Indy) who won the Grade 1 Personal Ensign H., Grade 3 Bed o’ Roses Breeders’ Cup H., and placed multiple times in graded competition earning a total of $633,857.
The Calder sale, headlined by a Distorted Humor colt purchased by Jess Jackson of Stonestreet Stables for $2.3 million, saw some welcome positives: a 9.3% increase in the average ($257,473) and a 33.3% increase in the median ($200,000). Total sales were down 10.4%. Four New York-breds went through the auction ring, grossing a total of $700,000.
