Rockport Harbor / Sari Filly Sells as Top NY-Bred, Sixth Highest Priced Two-Year-Old at OBS

by Sarah Mace - A grey/roan filly by Rockport Harbor with an A++ TrueNicks rating, who is a half-sister to stakes winner and graded stakes-placed turf-runner My Magic Moment (Forest Wildcat), was the top-selling New York-bred and sixth highest-priced two-year-old to sell at the OBS February Selected Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training on February 16th. The filly, who worked one furlong in :10 1/5 was consigned by Niall Brennan Stables and sold to Kinsman Farm for $185,000. Her dam’s only winner, My Magic Moment, a Lawrence Goichman New York-bred homebred, won the Missy Moo I Love You Stakes and ran third in the Grade 3 Miss Grillo Stakes at two; at three she ran second in the Dam Little Stakes and third in the Little Silver Stakes. Sari (Cozzene), who placed at three in England, has an unnamed yearling colt by Utopia and was bred last year to Any Given Saturday. The two-year-old filly, who did not meet her reserve at the Fasig-Tipton New York-bred Preferred Yearling sale ($85,000), is nominated to the Breeders’ Cup, OBS Champion Stakes, NATC Futurity, as well as to the New York Breeders’ Futurity and Lady Fingers Stakes. This is the first crop of two-year-olds for Rockport Harbor.

The second highest selling New York-bred was a dark bay/brown filly by Grand Slam out of Is Kylie Good (Touch Gold), which sold for $165,000 (Kenneth Lejeune, Agent) to Buzz Chace, Agent for Klaravich. She had sold to James Barry as a yearling at the Fasig-Tipton New York-bred sale for $50,000. The Grand Slam filly was featured in Thoroughbred Times Today’s “The Short List,” where Lejeune is quoted saying “I think the most impressive thing about her was her breeze and how she showed she could go on. She’s real leggy for a Grand Slam, and the class she carries around the barn and the racetrack makes her special.” Is Kylie Good won twice at two and has already produced a winner from two foals to race.

A bay daughter of New York’s 2009 leading third crop sire Hook and Ladder (Sequel Stallions New York at Keane Stud) out of Shanni (Distinctive Pro) sold to Steven W. Young (Agent) for $90,000 (Niall Brennan Stables, Agent). Unplaced Shanni has produced no starters, but is a half-sister to ten winners including stakes-winning and Grade 3-placed filly Shot Gun Favorite (Eltish) and three stakes-placed horses.

Overall the number of horses catalogued, offered and sold at OBS February declined from last year, but responses to the results of the first two-year-old sale of the year are cautiously optimistic. There was certainly strength at the high-end: the sale-topper was a Tiznow/Six Pack Sally colt who sold for $475,000, and 2 others went for over $400,000, while last year’s sale-topper sold for $320,000. The average price for the sale, $97,182, was only 8.4% below last year. Only two of the nine New York-breds to go through the ring did not sell. The other seven grossed $620,000, with an average $88,571.
